Leaving terminal after check-in

I'm going on the Escape in June out of Manhattan. I would like to get there early, check in and then take my son next door to the USS Intrepid museum. Is this possible? Can I leave after presenting all my cruise documents?

I did this when I was in Rome. I checked in got my ticket and then went on the ship dropped off my backpack and got right off.

Yes. But I would just drop my bags at the terminal and go to the museum w/o dealing with checkin.

Even if you show up early, it can still take a while to go through security and check in, just drop your bags with a porter and check in after the intrepid.
