Proper etiquette for MDR

DH and I rarely eat in the main dining room on our shorter cruises (4-5 days). We usually dine in the DR on the first night and then let our table mates and servers know that if we're not there within 5 minutes of the doors opening, we won't be there. It's just a courtesy. I'd hate to think of the waiters holding service for the table if we're not there.

If you are able to let them know in advance that you will not be dining, then do it. Our first few cruises were before anytime dining. I remember on more than one occasion being ready to order, but the staff was going to wait another 15 minutes to give the other family that was seated at our table time to show up. It was annoying to be asked to wait when we were ready to order & eat so we could enjoy the shows. I understand that sometimes people have no idea that they are not going to be eating in the dining room - just saying that if you do know, it's nice to let the waitstaff know.

Interesting. When we figured out that my parents were extremely directionally challenged on the ship we'd go ahead and order our apps. When they finally showed up, they got caught up. There were a couple of nights they barely finished apps before the main course showed.
