argybargy Posted August 29, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2018 We are thinking of taking a river cruise for Christmas - not necessarily for the Christmas markets more about enjoying Christmas with like minded travellers in a new and sociable environment. We have never taken a river cruise before and would appreciate thoughts/comments about which operator might be best for this type of cruise over Christmas and maybe which river would be preferable. Plus any other things we might need to think about? Thank you
JohnKen3 Posted August 29, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2018 We did the Crystal Mozart a couple of years ago and loved it. Christmas Markets are normally closed this time of year but we made it to a big one in Salzburg (Boxing Day) and another big one is Budapest. We particularly liked the Crystal Mozart for 2 reasons. Good entertainment in English in the evenings with additional cost bringing external acts (English band for New Years), Polish concert pianist for Christmas and a local “Family von Trapp” group for Linz/Salzburg. Lots of Sing A Longs in English too. The Crystal Mozart is double-width giving loads of separate indoor seating areas and up to 3 separate venues for lunch and 2 separate venues for dinner. So lots of warm on-board area on the boat if it gets too cold. I remember that the decks had to be salted daily.

Four of them (Portugal, Egypt, Vietnam and Danube Waltz) are still sailing on Christmas day but they are all sold out for this year. The challenge will be find a cruise line that is still operating that late in the year and hoping that there are still cabins available.
