While I was on K'dam Feb / Mar this year there was a party for captain Emil de Vries as he was leaving the ship and becoming fleet captain. Did this happen or is he still on K'dam?

Makes sense, since the most recent fleet captain, Capt. Sijbe de Boer, will be taking command of Nieuw Statendam

According to Captain Albert's Blog the current captain of Koningsdam is Noel O'Driscoll.https://www.hollandamerica.com/blog/albert/current-captains-and-their-schedules/

We are looking forward to him wishing us 'céad míle fáilte' as we board next week!

Might even bring him a few 'local delicacies' as gifts to the gods of calm seas!

What is the job description of a "Fleet Captain"?

 

He's part of/represents corporate marine quality assurance. So works out of Seattle however, as part of his duties, the fleet captain comes out to the ships to conduct audits and training in order to verify and assure that company standards are practiced and maximized at sea. Finally, he conducts quality assurance investigations. Not the same as Capt. Schoonderbeek does as traveling master

Thanks Copper for the job description. Doesn't sound like a too exciting of a job, but probably much less stressful than being a ship's Master. Probably, the Captains that are assigned to this role appreciate a "different kind of responsibility" for awhile.

Yep, plus it's a break! Many return to sea, as is happening with Capt. de Boer, after "riding a desk" for a while
