We stayed there for a week about 5 years ago.  We had an ocean view room, and  It was lovely, and not crowded when we were there.  We sat at the same beach hut every day.  I do remember seeing people from cruise ships come over and I think they had a buffet for lunch for them in the dining room that wasn't open to the regular guests at that time.  The beach isn't that big, but the pool area is really nice.

When we were last there, we paid $15 pp to access the beach and pools.  I guess it's been a while since they are now offering all-inclusive day packages.  This was a very, very nice property.

The Bahamas government signed a letter of intent on Wednesday with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and ITM Group for the sale of Grand Lucayan Resort and the redevelopment of Freeport Harbor.

The price for Grand Lucayan Resort is $65m.

Theme park and five-star hotel

The redevelopment project will include a theme park and a five-star hotel, according to Kwasi Thompson, minister of state for Grand Bahama.

An expansion and improvement of Freeport's cruise berths is also anticpated, as earlier reported.

The development is expected to take 24 months to 36 months. An additional 2m tourists are projected following completion.

On hand for the signing were ITM Group CEO Mauricio Hamui and Royal Caribbean's Russell Benford, VP government relations, Americas.

Costa Maya, Puerto Plata, Roatán

ITM are the developers of Puerto Costa Maya; Taino Bay, a new cruise port at Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic; and of Roatán's cruise port expansion.

Tribune 242 reports Michael Bayley spoke to members of the Bahamian press at an opening ceremony for Perfect Day at CocoCay, "telling members of the press his company was positioning itself to spearhead a multi-million dollar, multi-phased project on par with CocoCay in Freeport if negotiations with the government are successful."

Mr. Bailey went on to say, “Just the fact that we are going to redevelop those hotels and beach, that whole area, it is going to be in the hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars. The amount of work that will be underway to regenerate that destination, it is going to be a few years, hundreds of millions of dollars, massive project work, and I think the economic impact is going to huge.”

State Minister for Grand Bahama Kwasi Thompson said the joint venture between RCI and its investment partner, the ITM Group, will not only combine the redevelopment of the Freeport Harbor as a cruise port of choice but will also transform the Grand Lucayan resort into a theme park, featuring water-based family entertainment, with dining, gaming and entertainment options and five-star hotel accommodations.

The development will take place over a 24-month period, with $65 million of the purchase price for the Grand Lucayan Resort.

Mr. Bayley did note RCI’s full project specs could not be revealed publicly until a finished deal is worked out between the two sides, and there is another 30-40 days of negotiations remaining.
