Are Cenotes safe to swim in?

Recommended Posts

They look great and fun to swim in online but are they safe?  In terms of getting sick from some bacteria in the water?

I have done it several times and never had a problem. The water is super clear in the ones I have been on.

Ok thanks.  I am looking at the  RCI excursion Hidden World Snorkel and Mayan Outback adventure.    Has anyone done this excursion?

We've been in the cenote at Dzib ruins outside Progreso several times. The first few times the water was super cold and refreshing but the  last time, a couple of years ago, the water was very warm. Not sure what was going on but we didn't swim in it long.
