DIY St Thomas?

Can we just find a taxi and take it to Mountain Top, over to Magens Bay for a while and to Charlotte Amalie on our own?  Seems like I saw something here saying no private taxis anymore.  Anyone's experience DIY St Thomas?

Check out Godfrey. He does two hours shopping, two hours sightseeing, and time at a beach for a very reasonable price. He's not a private taxi but a tour operator.

See this thread for more feedback - taxis are readily available and no need to be tied down to a more structured tour with a group. 

You can also hail taxis on the street. No “private” taxis sounds strange, what does that mean?

We were on St Thomas last week. Ton's of private taxi's. Get off the ship the moment you can. Megan's gets crowded quick. They have chairs and umbrellas for rent in the gift shop.
