I can't stand it anymore! What do these abreviations mean??

Recommended Posts

A year or so ago someone posted them all here or a link to a list with all of them. However, I think the boards have been "reworked" since then so the post may be gone. Hopefully whoever posted that will see this thread and post it again. It really enlightened me and made me not feel so much like a dummy.

LOL...Laugh or Laughing Out Loud

ROFL....Rolling On Floor Laughing

LMAO....Laughing My A$$ Off

DH...Dear, Dearest, Darling, Dumba$$ Husband

DS....Dear, Dearest, Darling Son

DD.....Dear, Dearest, Darling Daughter

MIL...Mother In Law

FIL....Father In Law

SIL...can't remember....son in law or sister in law

BIL ...brother in law

DIL...daughter in law

IMHO...In My Honest Opinion or In My Humble Opinion

There were several pages of these and I don't remember them all. Maybe we can find that post or maybe someone who "knows" them all will post them.

There are other abbreviations or phrases I've seen exclusively about cruising that took me awhile to figure out. Maybe there could be a permanent sticky thread for new people? I'm thinking of:

PAX -- passengers

AFT -- back of the boat (not an abbrv, but could be confusing)

C & A -- Crown & Anchor

Docs -- documents

CD -- cruise director (not the musical disc)

TA -- travel agent

MED cruise -- mediterranian (don't laugh, I 1st thought it meant a special medical needs cruise :o )

PC -- i still don't know what this means!

I use "PC" for Panama Canal.

DH could also stand for Damn husband (or DW too...we don't want to be gender biased now :p )

AS far as PC goes...we had a conversation about that in a different thread.

PC could mean:

Personal Computer

Politically Correct

Port Canaveral

Panama Canal

Personal Companion (or Personal chef)

You can usually figure it out by seeing it in context.

The abbreviations that get to me are the ship abbreviations...since there ARE ships that have the same first letter. For instance:

MOS - what the hell is that supposed to mean? Could be the Mariner...or wait, maybe its the Monarch...perhaps its the Majesty?

Every post that abbreviates the ships name should have the ship written out at least once in that post...that way we know which ship we are reading about. Then it can be abbreviated for the rest of the thread. But, that's JMHO, FWIW :p (just my honest opinion, for what its worth).

You think these abbreviations are fun...try going over to the disboards...I have to leave one window open to their FAQ of abbreviations in order to read the posts over there.

These abbrevations aren't just the Cruise Critic abbreviations. ANY board you are on share the same ones. It's just short hand for computer users. I've been using bulletins boards (bbs) for about 6 years so it has come to a point where sometimes IRL (in real life) I actually say outloud computer speak. :p

I don't know how many times I have thought about conversations being "thread jacked" (meaning someone takes over the topic from the "op" original poster)

After a while, you get used to them, ykwim (ya know what I mean) :D

My military days reminds me of SOL and SOS. And there was always after a period of time at a location you became FIGMO.

Meanings cannot be said in polite society.:D

Steamboatin, I know SOS and SOL, but FIGMO is new to me (although I understand SNAFU and FUBAR). Can you post at least some of the words in FIGMO? I suspect that the "F" is the same one in SNAFU and FUBAR ... right

Gotta know .....

PS: Polite Society? Uh, do we have that here? ;)

SB, never mind. I asked my DH ("The Colonel"), although he says it's FIIGMO. ;)

One that drives me nuts is that sometimes Royal Caribbean is abbreviated here as "RCCL" (Royal Caribbean Cruise Line) while others abbreviate it as "RCI" (Royal Caribbean International)

Consistency people!

Thank goodness you asked OP (original poster) (See, I'm getting it now). I was going crazy but didn't know what board to post it on... I finally realized what TA meant, and it's not what it means here in Vegas... LOL. I feel enlightened and smart and .... giddy! (Ok, it's late and I need to go to bed...)

So, with that being said, myself, my DH and DS bid a fond good night.

Dona :)

FIGMO is "@$%&" it, got my orders. In this version the "I" is understood and not mentioned.

The other Colonel's FIIGMO is "@$%&" it I got my orders.

FIGMO is used when an individual receives their orders to relocate to another location on a permanent basis. They are a short timer. Depending on where their new location is the individual could be either happy (going to a good location or being discharged) or unhappy (going to a poor location or to an isolated duty location without their family).

Normally used in a joking way by others referring to you as being an individual that is not looking to doing much work.

If used by yourself you are saying that you are looking to get out of work.
