I’ve 2 cruises in Nov this year - the first a 4nt cruise then followed by an 8nt cruise.

The first final payment is for the second cruise followed 10 days later by the first cruise

!! Odd

Longer cruises have an earlier final payment date than shorter cruises.

Any reason?

That has just always been their policy.  If I had to guess, because they want to make sure the cruise is paid for based on ability to resell the room on short notice if need be.  Shorter cruises would be way easier to sell last minute than long ones I would imagine.
