Hi I have been reading the boards but am having difficulty finding the answers.
best way to get to Rome from airport.
What is a hotel recommendation close to where we would go to get to port?

Best way( not private transfer) to get from Rome hotel( pre cruise) to port?

thank you so much

ps have been to Rome a few times and don’t need to be near the sites like the Vatican, coliseum ect

"Best" is a very vague term...meaning different things to different people. Private transport would be "best" to many.

Taxi or train would be the next more common ways. Taxi is flat rate (about 50 euros) to the historical center.

There is a HUGE thread just down the board on Rome hotels.

Getting to the port is a bit more complicated. Again, private transport is probably "best". Train is an option, particularly if you can handle your bags easily. There is a bus line discussed in a thread here. There is also some shared shuttle options. Looking around on the board would be very beneficial.

By the way, on city to port, taxi is the least desirable...most expensive.

What is your goal with your stay in Rome?  Are you only planning to stay one night and then head to Civitavecchia?  Are you hoping to do any additional sightseeing? (Rome has a lot more to offer than just the Vatican and Colosseum)....

You have to look at the whole picture when planning, especially if you don't want to take a private transfer to the port.

One possibility:  When you arrive at FCO, take the express train to Termini station in Rome. There are a number of reasonably priced hotels around this station. Look for one that is easy walking distance so you don't have to take a taxi. One I've stayed at and can recommend: Hotel UNA.  Not the cheapest but nice sized rooms, good breakfast.

When you want to head to the port, take the train from Termini station to Civitavecchia station. They have installed elevators in the station now, so you no longer have to schlep bags up and down flights of steps.  At the station, you should look for a bus to transfer you to the port entrance (local bus, I believe it is a 2 euro charge per person).  From that point, you'll get another bus that will take you to your specific ship (they will be marked with ship name).

As you can probably tell, this involves a fair amount of transportation changes and schlepping of luggage. But if you don't want a private transfer the options are not numerous. Maybe you could stay near the airport and arrange to go back to the terminal the following day and take the ship's transfer to the port -- although it's likely that the charge for 2 people would start to approach that of a private transfer.

Your roll call may offer an opportunity to share a private transfer with others, which would also lead to a more reasonable cost.

Some companies used to offer shared shuttles to Civitavecchia, but many of them stopped doing this during COVID and -- at least the ones I know -- they have not yet restarted.

Thank you so much. I have decided to stay one night precruise in civitavecchia. Does the train from the airport go directly there?

No, it doesn't. You need to change trains in Rome.

Why stay in Civi? Rome is one of the great cities in the world. Civi is an average port town.

Truly with luggage a private transfer is best.  If it’s just one night another option is stay at an airport hotel, take the train or shuttle into Rome for the day or evening and transfer the next morning to the port.
