Do you care what time you board?  If not, maybe check in and select a later time to board and avoid the rush.  Want to be on board ASAP and have lunch on the ship then check in within a day or two of when check in opens so you can select an earlier time slot.  The earlier times usually fill first.

Thank you for the quick response. We will be taking our first cruise in May, so this is new to us.
