Amsterdam or Rotterdam

Next Spring we are on a cruise that leaves out of Rotterdam.  It will be Tulip time and the Keukenhof gardens will be open.  Should we stay in Amsterdam or Rotterdam?   Will stay in Rotterdam on the night pre-cruise departure but which is the best spot to stay to visit the gardens.

The places listed are Amsterdam, Haarlem, Schiphol airport and Leiden, which leads me to believe that Rotterdam would be less convenient. Checking on Google maps, while Keukenhof is between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, it is considerably closer to Amsterdam, and closer still to Haarlem.

The Amsterdam start point for that express bus is Europaplein, so a visitor is likely still to have to get themselves there from central Amsterdam. I think that you can get from Rotterdam Centraal to Leiden Centraal by train in about half an hour, so it's probably not much less convenient than starting in Amsterdam. The OP would want to weigh that up against the hassle of staying in different hotels in different cities if it's caused only by visiting Keukenhof, plus the ease of flying to Rotterdam airport (if that's a possibility) as opposed to Amsterdam.
