Carnival Venezia out of NYC

I have been to both those ports numerous times.  They are both very walkable if you want - but you must get transportation if you want to go to a beach.  San Juan has tons of stores, 2 forts you can walk to, etc.  St. Thomas has many stores right near the port, and the sky ride if you wish to go on that.

Does anyone know if the ports of San Juan and St. Thomas are easily explored on your own?  Without doing a Carnival excursion? Recommendations of things to do once there?

San Juan yes. I did both forts the first time. The first one is a pretty easy walk. But it was probably a mile walk to the second one. If you don't want to walk you could do better with a cab ride than an excursion probably. This last time I walked to that umbrella street but it's under construction. But the ship docks right in town so I don't think you need an excursion.

St. Thomas I haven't been to. Maybe in August.
