Is the Celebrity Island of Capri Excursion (fully guided tour of Capri) worth it and how crowded is Capri in early June?

Here is the description:
Tour the beautiful sites and historic highlights of the idyllic resort isle of Capri. You'll spend the day soaking up the city's luscious gardens and sun-drenched squares, and exploring an array of trendy restaurants, shops, and bustling streets. Visit the the spectacular Villa San Michele and gardens or Monte Solaro and enjoy some free time to explore Anacapri before returning to Capri Town, where you'll tour La Piazzetta square and the Gardens of Augustus, named after Emperor Augustus.

Worth it?  That depends on you.  If you are the type of cruiser that does not like to step off a ship without having a tour/guide waiting to lead you through whatever, then it might be worth it to you.  On the other hand, you could walk off the ship on your own, stroll about 5 minutes from the cruise port over to the ferry port, buy a ticket on the next high-speed boat to Capri (the same boats used by the excursions) and off you go.  Once on Capri you can explore Capri town on foot (which is what will happen on your tour) and later take a local bus or taxi up to Anacapri where you can get the Chair Lift up to the top of Mt Solaro.   Keep in mind that much of what you get with a tour is a guide who will herd you around ("follow the sign or flag") and tell you things like "this is a jewelry store,"  "this is a boutique store that sells jeans for $1000,"  etc.    If you want to know something about the History of Capri you could rely on a guide or simply read the Wikipedia page.

For purposes of price comparison, I believe the high speed ferry would cost you about $100 (round trip).  Once on the island, you would also need to pay for the funicular (takes you from the ferry port up to town), any buses or taxis, and the Chair Lift (assuming you want to do this thing.   If you decide to DIY, you can search for many past posts (on this forum) with detailed info on buying the ferry tickets, using the funicular, etc.

Thanks! We're more DIYers so grabbing the ferry ourselves isn't an issue, e mi parli italiano, un poco. More concerned with crowds as there will be 2 mega-ships in port the same day in addition to our more modest one, though still big (Celebrity Beyond)

Capri will be crowded in June.

One change to Hank's plan that I would suggest would be to get a taxi at the port and go up to Anacapri upon arrival, working your way down to Capri later in the day prior to leaving the island.

Part of this is just the "start at the furthest point and work back" mentality, and part is experience with the crowds on the island.  It's easier, in my experience, to get a taxi at the port for the long ride up to Anacapri than to get any transportation at all from Capri, because almost everyone else goes there first.

Ferry boats are an easy and beautiful way to get to Capri. We’ve done is a few times from land tri- to crom cruise ship. Definitely not worth an excursion price nor crowd. Agree with Anacapri.  Be sure to wander away from the square and explore the other side of the island. There is a great restaurant on the far side that is up a narrow walkway. We’ve been twice but cannot remember the name. It has great views and good food away from the crowds.

If your concerns about crowds involve worrying about getting the ferry, you can purchase tickets in advance. It's a bit of a trade-off as once you buy then you are committed to those times, but if you are organized and know about when you'd want to go (I suggest as early as is reasonable) and return, it might give you some security over just winging it on the day and worrying about getting a ticket...

Must see is Giardini di Augusto (Garden of Augustus) in Capri. A nice oasis of calm in the midst of the shopping... with great views from several outlooks.

We took the town bus (windy roads!) vs the funicular but would do the funicular for subsequent visits.

Thanks for the tips. If we were to do it we were planning to go first thing, but now leaning towards just hiring a car and driving ourselves to Ravello/Amalfi/Positano/Sorrento. Even though we've done that before, there are new places we want to try since our last visit. And with MSC Grandioso (5000-6000 passengers) and RC Odyssey OTS (4500-5000 passengers) in port the same day, we expect it to be crowded no matter where we go. 😉

have you considered taking a boat cruise vs driving? We were on the Coast in the off season and there was no parking anywhere near Positano... cannot imagine those roads in prime tourist season...
