Destiny broke a propeller

I was thinking about this over the weekend, and if they had to return to port depending on how far out they where when they had to return, say they where 3 hours out, so 3 hours back, an hour in port, that's 7 hours behind schedule thats if they are 3 hours..... that would put them in port around 4pm

which would fit the the time frame.

Just to update everyone if you already don't know,I was on the ship and am now at a hotel It was very full of commotion. The ship and cruise workers did what they could considering there were so many people.

I do have to be at work right now and instead am still in san juan. Many people were entirely too freaking out and upset. There isn't much they can do to orderly get everything done especially with 3500 more people waiting to board.

Thank you so much for the update. By April 02 when we're set to sail, all should be fine.

I really don't get the point of people freaking out - what's it going to accomplish? Perhaps if you spent your $$ limit on the trip you may not have funds to stay for a couple of days. Good points for cancellation/interuption insurance and or booking your flights through the cruise line.

Glad to hear you are back on solid ground - safe and sound. Enjoy your extra couple of days in SJ! :D

My family is on this cruise. Traveling with a small child. They sat on a dock with 3000 people for 9 hours yesterday and finally got on the ship at midnight. They said there were rumours of the ship having to go back to Aruba for a women with a health problem??? Also the broken propeller.

They said people were so angry and started to "riot" - the police were called in. Also elderly people fainting.

The passengers were all offered $25 for their troubles!!

I am just glad they are safe and hopefully it will be more than 25$

cant wait to see their photos.

I took this cruise 4 years ago. I cant imagine this.

So Carnival is only giving people $25?! I thought they were paying for people's hotels like the airlines do when they overbook. Is Carnival really only giving people $25 and the passengers have to pay out of pocket for changing their flight and their hotel stay? I've never bought travel insurance, but I might consider it next time if this is the case!

I think you misunderstood, the 25$ is for the people who were just getting ON the Destiny last night.

From other posters it seems that Carnival did take care of hotels and such for the people getting OFF the ship.

This is why I buy travel insurance!!!

While I dont have specifics on what happened to the propeller or caused the delay-anyone with an upcoming trip should be fine on the Destiny. They left St Thomas at 5:30 pm (almost on schedule) :)

The word is that people are very upset from the problems yesterday, but seems to be back to normal and no further delays or problems.

And yes, the 25$ offered was to the passengers delayed boarding in San Juan--(to be spent on the ship)........

Just wondering how many people are still stranded in San Juan and Miami trying to get home. I finally received flight confirmation for a flight home on tuesday.

O well, and extra day and a half in San Juan.

we just got back from our cruise tonight at 8:00 pm, it's been a long 36 hours!

we were notified about problems with the ship's propultion system around 11:30 am on saturday. we were told that if they could fix the problem in the next 24 hours that we should make it back to San Juan by 6:00 pm on Sunday evening. when we woke on Sunday morning the ship was obviously fixed because we were moving much faster. we arrived in San Juan around 3:00 pm and then the nighmare for many began. However, considering how many people were displaced and inconvienced by this entire episode i thought Carnival did a decent job at trying to deal with the problems that arose.

Our family was fairly lucky in that we were amoung the first four groups of people to disembark. we were cleared from the ship by 7:30 pm. we had a tour bus arrange to take us to the Radisson Ambassador Hotel. after that we did not see any representative from Carnival. This morning we found out that many people were still on the ship until very late and they were having many problems with their hotel and airline reservations. Again we were lucky and Carnival had arranged a charter flight directly to Toronto for a lot of the Canadians on board. However i'm sure there were many that were not so lucky as my family were.

Overall i enjoyed the cruise and so did my family. I will post a review later this week as time permits. I hope that the other passengers on the ship with me made it home safe and sound. However i heard that some people may not get flights out of San Juan until later in the week. I'm sure we will hear many stories over the next few weeks about our adventures.

Sailing April 2. Anyone have an official update of Destiny's problem? and most importantly, the solution?

I just got home from this cruise, and it's a VERY long story indeed, which I will post later. Suffice it to say that part of it was beyond Carnival's control and part of it was, and the part of it that was, was the victim of corporate facesaving and a failure to tell not only the passengers getting of this cruise and the passengers getting on the next cruise what was really going on but also senior staff. I think you will get the picture if I tell you that the Cruise Director was only told of by the Captain of our navigational situation at the end of the debarkation lecture and the Cruise Director was visibly blindsided.

In brief, Friday night a woman slipped and fell in the casino and fractured her ankle, but also went into cardiac arrest. Since we were only 40 miles out from Aruba they decided to turn around and take her back to a hospital. In the course of performing this manuever, bearings around a propeller shaft failed and we traveled at ten knots for quite awhile on Saturday. Based on this assumption, the cruise folks in home office in Miami were planning for us to stay on the ship on Sunday night and to accomodate those getting on the 3/19 cruise. However, the ship's engineers fixed the problem overnight on Friday night and we got in at 3 PM on Sunday. The result was absolute chaos, and yes, a near riot, but no, to my knowledge, the police were not called.

The problem resulted from the fact that no one, neither we on the 3/12 sailing, nor those on the 3/19 sailing, who stood in the streets of San Juan for hours to get on their cruise, were told what was really going on.

I'm too tired to give you the whole story which is rather complicated, but will try to post more later in the week.

I have family on the Destiny. They were supposed to dock at 7 AM tomorrow morning in San Juan but are limping back because of a broken propeller and won't be in port until tomorrow night. My SIL and family have been told they will miss their flights and are being put up somewhere until new flights can be arranged. Anyone heading to the dock to board tomorrow morning will be disappointed.

How can they fix it in time for the next cruise to start? It will have to leave late, probably on Monday or can they get it done quicker? Anyone ever been in that postion?

Broken propellers mean change of itineraires. The ship cannot make speed, so ports will be missed. It's a big time problem. Check out the Queen Mary 2 with it's out of service pod. The queen has been limping around the world with only 3 out of four props working since January. SHIP HAPPENS! I feel bad for Destiny's upcoming cruisers. Metrowon

I don't think they can fix something like that without going into drydock.

Hopefully I'm wrong and it can be fixed fast without too much inconvenience to anybody.

Something like that happened to a NCL ship and it took them months to get it fixed. They cut out certain ports of calls because the ship couldn't go as fast.

Hopefully this is a quick fix.

Bill

Which cruise do we cancel to get into drydock? Or do we just mess with every one for awhile. Wait and sea? Broken props present serious scheduling problems. Metrowon

CArnival has handled all of this very poorly they have told us very little and only tell us day to day what is happening. we were 2 ours late yesterday and will be at least 3 hours late today. They have shortend how long we will be in each port. It is in the propullsion system and cannot get all the parts for a month so this will be an on going problem. People have tried to be good sports, but Carnival just keeps screwing up and making things worse, but the way we are being updated on board.

OMG, I hope it's a quick fix. We're scheduled to go in two weeks. When you are saying it has to go into dry dock to fix, are we talking days? or weeks?
They have to find a drydock, that's available 1st, and one that is close. This could be an out of service problem that last weeks, not days. They may not cancel your cruise, just don't exspect what you exspected. The cruise line should be very generous if your trip is affected, and your next try with them should be seriously discounted. Sorry, about the news. I hope whoever started this thread is not creating unnesasary panic. A broken prop is not a quick fix. Metrowon

okay I just called Carnival and they said it was not a propeller it was the prolportion (sp?) and it has already been fixed and the ship will arrive in San Juan at 3pm tomorrow.

Call them again...you'll probalby get a different answer. Seems the CS reps are NOT in the know.

What would we do without the Internet? Actually if one of the propulsion motors was gone, I would think it would slow down less than 50% - neglecting any compensation to keep the ship going in a straight line. Isn't horsepower vs speed one of them squared relationships ?

If Destiny can make it from Aruba to San Juan anytime on Sunday, it is moving faster than a crawl.

But you haven't figured in the drag of a non operating propeller. Now Carnival roams the Seas with two lame ships, The other being the QUEEN MARY 2 with propulsions problems. Fact not fiction. Metrowon
