Vancouver Info if needed

If we leave River Rick Casino arount 10:00am on Friday morning and get the wine at Waterfront will we be at the pier around 11:00am? Will the Skytrain be busy at 10:00am from that area? H

10am on a Friday morning will be a good time to catch the train. Every 2nd train will be coming from the airport and those trains are usually close to empty opposed to the ones coming from Richmond center. From River Rock, the ride is 20 minutes so if you catch the train by 10am, you'll be downtown about 10:20 and should definitely be at the pier by 11am.

Is there any place special within walking distance that you would recommend we visit? Our flight arrives at YVR at 11:00am and I don't know that I want to do the Hop-on, Hop-off. We'll be staying one night post-cruise at the Marriott Pinnacle on W. Hastings. I know that traffic is a bear so we definitely won’t be renting a car!!!

We have been to Vancouver one time before but really didn't do too much as it was post-cruise and we were exhausted! We stayed at the Delta Suites then so the only thing we really did do is go to the Lookout and walked around Gastown for a short time! I'm also wondering if there is someplace (reasonable) that you would recommend for dinner on a Friday night that we could walk to….seafood preferred!! Thanks so very much!!!

Given that you won't be downtown until early afternoon you are correct a HOHO would be of little value to you. Things that you could do is to walk down to the seawall and have a pleasant walk into Stanley Park, there you could have a bit of a walk around but given that it is a 1000 acres you are not going to see much. The Vancouver Trolley people do operate a HOHO just within the park for $10 p/p which gives you 14 stops. On the way back you could stop for dinner at Cardero's which is a marine pub overlooking the Coal Harbour yacht basin and Stanley Park.

Another alternative would be to go to Granville Island, a large festival market, where you will find many shops and restaurants.

Thanks for all this information! I think the walk to Stanley Park will be great...oh, and having dinner at a pub...fabulous! :D

We're staying at the Westin Bayshore so Cardero's is very close. Looks like a fantastic location and menu. Are advance reservations necessary for dinner on a weekend or can you pretty much walk in and have a reasonable wait?

You should be fine to just walk in, especially for a small (2) table.,

They do have a reservation line and do get busy on summer weekend evening....I'd make a reservation if it were me.

Last sea day before arriving in Vancouver and I cannot find the info on the limo company I reserved with! I found it through some great transfer info someone posted. Now I can't find the particular post! Could someone please post some names of companies for transfers from the pier to the airport? Thank you soooo much for your help! I'll check back later.

I'm going to say with 99.999% confidence that you will be sailing from Canada Place and that this will not change. It has been sailing from Canada Place all season and I highly doubt that it will change on its last sailing out of Vancouver. :)

I agree with Tweedy, these docking assignments are completed back in February and seldom if ever are they changed. The Downtown office for Hertz is in the 1200 Blk of Granville St. a full mile from Canada Place. You can coordinate a drop off with them by contacting the location directly at 604-606-4711

We are thinking to fly into Vancouver early on Wednesday morning for our HAL Volendam cruise and drop off our bags hopefully around 11 ish and do a bit of sightseeing in Vancouver and then board the ship later in the afternoon around 3 pm or so.

My question is how early will HAL Volendam accept luggage ? My plan is to check in later in the afternoon and just to drop off the bags earlier.. Will my plan work ?

We will be the only ship in port that day.

I have a few more questions I hope someone can help me.

I am thinking to buy a day pass ( $9 pp) for the train from the airport to the port to use to get to the port and drop off our luggage and then to sightsee by public transit quickly for a few hours.

Things we want to do include:

Going over the Burrard Inlet with the Seabus and seeing Lonsdale Queuy for a bit and coming back with the Seabus.

Maybe walking to Gastown and sightseeing there quickly and then I want to get to Granville market for a bit.

How can I get with the train from the Waterfront area to Granville Market?

I tried to look on the Transit site but I was not able to see it there.. is there a way to get with the train close to Granville Market?

I am thinking to take the train as its so much quicker than waiting for a bus.. we only have about 5 hours to sightsee before we have to be back at the ship.

Thank you kindly for any help or suggestions.

You can certainly drop off your luggage around 11ish, even 10:30 if you are a bit earlier. The guys will be there to accept the luggage. You can then go and do a bit of sightseeing before checking in.

I think you may be a little ambitious with your sightseeing if you are planning to do this all before boarding the ship on the day you arrive. If you are planning to do a little adventure by transit, purchasing the day pass is your best bet. The train from the airport to waterfront is a 25 minute ride. Taking the seabus over to North Vancouver gives you a different perspective of Vancouver which you will see when you sail away. I believe it is the #50 Waterfront/False Creek bus that will take you to Granville Island or close enough.

The pass is good on Skytrain/bus/seabus. granville island market isn't really near a Skytrain stop (Olympic Village would be the closest - 8-10 blocks); but there's a number of buses from the downtown core that head there. Check http://translink.ca/ for full details.

Also, at the airport, you need to buy your all-day pass at the 7-11 or Pharmasave (both at the lowest level of the domestic area), you can't buy it on the platform.

Wow you guys are great !

Thank you so much for all the info, its very helpful and just what I needed.

We used to live in North Vancouver about 9 years ago, it will be nice to revisit some of my favourite places, even if time is so short.

Thank you again so much.

If you used to live on the North Shore then you will want to get over to Lonsdale Quay - the redevelopment of the ship yards and lower Lonsdale has completely changed the ambience of the area and just walking through the redeveloped area and looking at the historical markers and displays could take up much of your time - Gastown is next door to the ship so that is easy to do - I would forget Granville Island - too far away if time is short and perhaps just explore the area around the Convention Center and see Jack Poole Plaza and the Olympic cauldron - maybe stop in at Mahoney`s and Sons for a cold adult beverage before boarding your ship.

Cheers

Dennis

Wow what a great thread - but information overload and I havent read everything - but a question - We are from Winnipeg Manitoba and doing of course an Alaskan cruise tour. We will be landing in Van end of July next year and since I have lived in Campbell River and visited Van many times, it is not new to me, however DH has never been before and we are debating on whether to stay downtown (thinking times square suites, have stayed there before) or stay at the river rock casino resort - the reason we were thinking river rock is because I have been reading about the two night markets in richmond.

Now that I have babbled on - here is my question, is it worth staying at river rock to see the markets? and if so which one is better (Richmond night market or Summer night market). It seems from all I have read my DH would love the experience. If we stay at times square we will do the Robon downtown thing. But will probably be shopped and sightseeing exhausted by the end of our cruise tour (13 days total). The markets sound close and different (I love experiencing new foods and people.

Would love your feed back

It really comes down to personal preference, half of us will say the night market and half will stay downtown. If I had never been to Vancouver like your DH then I would want to stay downtown, take in Stanley Park and all of what the city has to offer. While the night market is interesting it really is only one dimension of the city.

The shops on Robson are just that, shops. WHile not the same, they're similar to the major shopping strolls in other major Canadian cities. The night markets however, are quite different. I would go to the Night Market. That being said, it should control where you stay, as you can get from downtown to the night market [near River Rock] and back very easily on Skytrain
