Movies to watch pre-cruise

Recommended Posts

I thought it was something generic for cruisers to see before departure! Seemed topical, so to speak!

I quite agree. There's also "Assault on a Queen" (1966; Frank Sinatra), not to mention the two "Poseidon" films. "In Which We Serve" (1942' Noel Coward) is also good at reminding us what a splendid idea those pesky little life jackets are.

Venice: "Death in Venice," of course, but also "Don't Look Now" (1973; Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie), "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989; Harrison Ford), and at least one of the James Bond films.

Last year on the Galaxy we stopped in Mykonos. We asked a taxi driver to take us to the "Shirley Valentine" beach, It is about 10 minutes out of town. There is a taverna with a sign saying Shirley Valentine was filmed here. We hasd a lovely lunch of calamari and Greek Salad watching the sea in front of us and knew why Shirley wanted to stay.

I recommend the movie, lots of fun and I recommend an hour or two at Shirley Valentine's beach.

I'd vote for "Only You" for Rome. I just watched it again (after our trip to Rome last year) and would really like to know if the scene where the girls are having dinner while on the hunt for Damien (just before she loses her shoe) is located in the restaurant across from Santa Maria in Trastavere.

We had the best "Venetian" coffee there just as a glorious Roman wedding was taking place, and got to watch the bride and all her attendants arrive. The whole thing was magical.

Anyone know?

Shirley Valentine is one of my favorite movies. It's hard to find in stores but can be ordered from Amazon.com...VHS format only..at least that was the case last year. I had a copy for a long time, loaned it out, it was passed around and never returned and so I finally ordered another one.

Maybe I will make it to where it was filmed one day.

I'm pretty sure it was.

[P.S. - hope you got to see the outstanding mosaics inside SMiT!]

Under the Tuscan Sun -- the views of Positano and, obviously, Tuscany were almost as breathtaking as being there.

I had a sunset dinner overlooking Positano on Via Colombo just below the hotel they used in the movie - the Albergo California. Positano remains my wife's favourite memory of Italy.

This movie also features shots around Cortona, Siena (around the Duomo), and Montepulciano (the flag-throwing competition)

The 2003 movie THE ITALIAN JOB with Donald Sutherland begins with a exciting boat race through the canals of Venice. It show quite a bit of the city from a unique perspective. It's a pretty good flic besides!

My Family and Other Animals, 2005 Set in Corfu, pre-WW2, very funny (and nice) movie about the author Lawrence Durrell's family. Actually the memoirs of his younger brother who became a world-renowned biologist, partly because of their stay on the island.

Also, one of the James Bond movies (For Your Eyes Only) used the Achilleon Palace in Corfu as a casino set.

'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' - set on the Greek island of Cephallonia

'My House in Umbria' with Maggie Smith. May be a bit premature with this one for cruisers - cruise tours not yet likely to include Umbria (the next Tuscany)

IL POSTINO for the Naples area. Great Italian film with subtitles.

THE ITALIAN JOB for Venice

There is a movie called, I think, COME SEPTEMBER with Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida filmed in Italy that is just beautiful and cute.

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER with Cary Grant (in fact they played it on our Med cruise last week) and of course ROMAN HOLIDAY with Audrey Hepburn (which was also played on the ship.

Crusana

Hee hee hee...."Euro Trip!" Makes me laugh to think about it! "Dirty Rotten Scoundrals is still our all time favorite! "Three Coins in a Fountain" "Chocolate" "Under the Tuscan Sun"

Can anyone remember the name of the British movie which also played in America about the British lady who goes on vacation to Greece by herself (a very un-appreciated "Mom/Wife") and has one heck of a time!!!!?

SHIRLEY VALENTINE !!!! (I can't believe I remember!!!!)

For Italy, there's one with Marissa Tomei and Robert Downey--I think the name is She's The One.

Also, for Rome, there's one with Charleton Heston playing Michaelangelo--I'll try to find the name--but it's excellent--shows the Sistine Chapel, etc..
