Transportation:Hamburg to Copenhagen

Recommended Posts

We will probably fly into Hamburg, rent a car for a week and return car in Copenhagen before Princess cruise.

Any recommendations on doing this? Map Quest says it's a 4 hour drive.

What's the drive like? Is the time realistic? Are there tolls?

Any advice is appreciated. J.

Another option to consider is to travel by train from Hamburg to Copenhagen.

Thanks for the train idea. We did think of that but will probably go with the car since we will arrive the Wed. before the cruise which sails at 9:00pm on the Sunday.

Thanks!

So this is the quickest and best route?

I saw on the ferry link that the crossing is closed down while G.Bush visits this July.

Are there any alternative ways for us to get there?

No it was the Gedser - Rostock Crossing,

Rødby - Puttgarden will maybe be crowded at that day because of holiday traffic and the closing of the port in Rostock, so a resevation will be good.

Or you could stay in line for the next ferry, if this is the case it will take more than a quarter at the ferry terminal.

Here is a new input.

It is only the main freeway in Rostock that is closed so it´s only a detour but maybe some people will take to Puttgarden instead.

There is another route that goes to Denmark over Jutland, Funen and Zealand to Copenhagen.

There is one funny thing about it when you are crossing the Storebælt fixed link, you will both drive over the East Bridge (the Suspension Bridge) and sail under it on your cruise.

Just one thought: Have you priced this? A one-way hire from one country to another may incur a stonking great drop-off fee, which could render this option uneconomic. Hopefully there won't be one, but it's something to look for before you do any more detailed planning.

Thanks again. Any input in getting us from Hamburg to Copenhagen is very much appreciated. My DH thinks there is a bridge we could drive over on instead of the ferry.

I did price the car rental with Auto Europe ( Canada pricing ) and it is not bad for 4-7 days. The longer we take the car the better pricing we get. We would like to tour around Denmark a little on our way into Copenhagen so the car will be needed.

And I am able to get the car at the airport in Hamburg and return it downtown Copenhagen.

Thanks again. J.
