Cabin next to Medical Center - advice please

Hello my fellow cruising friends,

Has anyone any experience or hearsay with cabins next to medical centre? Our cabin has been 'guaranteed' four months before sailing on deck 4 of NCL Spirit with two walls on the medical centre. We would like to know whether there is an impending disaster and it would be worth rebooking or upgrading.

What are you worried about being next door to the Medical Center? Noise or catching the flu?

 

Hospital zones are quiet zones except for the occasional siren from ambulances, and I guarnatee you will not hear a siren from an ambulance aboard a cruise ship.

You can catch the flu, stomach flu, from any surface aboard the ship; elevator buttons, stairways, hand railings, door knobs, and sitting next to someone in a restaurant, theatre, or while passing them in passageways. I fail to understand how you can catch anything in your cabin.

 

You probably have booked the quiestest cabin aboard the ship.

If anyone has actually any experience with noise in this location please reply. Not worried about the flu - are hearty New Zealanders, some of the strongest sheep on the planet... :rolleyes: ;)

We were above a medical center on one ship but heard no unusual noises. I think the only thing you would have to worry about is getting into REALLY rough seas or something. Then the hall to the infirmary can sometimes get pretty crowded w/seasick people losing their meals! LOL! Actually, I only mention this because I read about it on a post once. Also, a friend was on a a ship had an outbreak of Novovirus and said everyone was going to the dr. on board! Don't think it's a common occurance that you have to worry about, though.

I once was called to assist in an emergency appendectomy / breast augmentation when my cabin was next to the medical center. Well, not really but I was able to get bonine real quick when I needed it. :D

Just a tip, wherever you are on the ship, please be aware of using hand sanitizer as often as you can, especially before eating. My brother and his wife (hearty Poles) caught the Norovirus on the second to last day of their recent cruise and were quarantined by the ship's doctor to their cabin. They missed one of their long-awaited shore excursions and had to have their meals brought in by room service.

 

It's not being overly cautious to use your own as well as the ship's hand sanitizers. Also, keep your hands away from your face.

 

As far as your room location, shouldn't be a problem. Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks for the advice, we're clean freaks and always travel with a mini hand sanitizer anyway (living in NY). We'll be extra vigilant.

I too have been looking at a room near the doctor's office and was concerned about people getting sick on the floor outside my door if the seas were rough....but the other concern is what else is on deck 4? When I look at the diagram the back half is blank - what is there? Is it crew quarters or the galley or something else and will I regret being near it?

Well obviously you'll have crew cabins for the more valuable members of the crew on the starboard side of the deck, while the galley would be located centrally between the main restaurants of deck 6... The aft part of deck five would probably have more of the galley as well as storage rooms for food, while deck four would have offices, crew mess, luggage handling and other auxiliary areas. Main engines would be on decks 1-3 of that blank area.

I doubt you would hear any more sounds from the back half of the ship than you would hear from the pool deck, lounge or casino in the cabins directly below. ;)
