Port side views???

We just returned from the med on Millie and were very disappointed that the views were almost always on the starboard side. We saw Brilliance of the Seas and it's port side faced the port as well as HAL.

QUESTION IS: Has anyone been on Princess in the med, do they show the views of the port on the port or starboard side? So was this due to the port authorities or Celebrity?

It all depends what berth is assigned to the ship. Most times we've cruised the ship has berthed on both sides during the port calls. Sometimes we get lucky and can see the city sights from our veranda ... other times we see the sea or the port's industrial area. It's all up to chance.

We have 2 cabins booked on the Portside for the same itinerary.(Barcelona to Venice) My agent recommended them!! I had a choice of the Starboard side...should I try to switch? Please advise us!

Hmmm....This is an interesting topic.

I remember asking this question back in October when we were trying to choose a cabin. The response I received was that there wasn't much difference between the 2 sides... That in some ports the starboard side was better, and in others, the port side had the best views.

We are traveling the opposite route (Venice to Barcelona), so maybe this has some impact on which is better.

Luvcrusin' I would stay with port side. That side of the ship will be toward land for most of your journey. You will stand a better chance of seeing the passing scenery that way.

if you are going into VEnice then the answer is very simple.. the right side .. starboard

I would switch to starboard side. If they park the boat the same way they did for us. In Villefranche, Mykonos, Santorini, Dubrovnik and Venice all had better views from the starboard side. Livorno and Citavitavecchia were industrial ports and it did not matter which side there was no pretty view. In Naples we faced a concrete building and if we looked to our left we could see some of the city but the best view in Naples was aft. We sat back there on the deck and it was very pretty.

In Dubrovnik they did face us to the port only to have a HUGE yellow crane that I could almost touch outside of my balcony that never moved all day. Even though they did face us toward the port in Dubrovnik the most beautiful view was on the starboard side.

As far as views from your balcony while sailing it was mostly ocean not much land. That does not matter as much to me as the view from my balcony while I am in port, you may be different. But definitely in Venice, it is so beautiful coming into Venice and we had to leave our beautiful RS suite to go up to the poolside decks to see it.

So hopefully this will help you to decide.

Input like yours are helpful to all of us...Thank you! Royal Suite is a beautiful suite not to have a great view of your choice! My questions for you: (1) The Celebrity Suites on Millie are always on the right side of the boat, does that mean they are on the Starboard side? I am naive in this regard...(2)What time did the cable car stop running at night in Santorini? (3) How was your experience in Athens, was the traffic congested? (4) Any theme music (Italian, Greek) music on board? (5) What time does the Millie shuttle stop running back from St Mark's square back to the boat and vice versa? Look at a map showing the route you are sailing. I'd try to get a cabin on whichever side of the ship faces the coast of Italy. The Brilliance sailed along the coast and the views were spectacular (we were starboard...the better side when sailing south)

Anybody who has cruised Millie Barcelona-Venice...your thoughts with regards to view of land (port) upon embarkation at each port for portside vs. starboardside cabins would be appreciated. Thank you...

We booked port side at the travel agents suggestion because of the way the Brilliance docks. Have I been misinformed? We are spending a great deal on this cruise (2 suites- kids get their own cabin this time [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]) and want to avoid any dissappointment that I have control over.
Suekay, If we are sailing south from Barcelona wouldn't both starboard and port be facing the coast at some point, port when going south and starboard when heading north. For the experienced: Does the berth change each sailing?
Will we be sailing closer to shore on one direction?

I have to agree with you. We also booked the Portside as we are sailing from Barcelona to Venice. Looking at the route I assumed that we would get views of Italy as we salied by, and the Starboeard side would get the views of Greece. According to some of the threads I have been reading it sounds like my assumption may have been wrong....I too took the agents recommendation!

Okay, let's try and figure this out. I've been reading the threads along with the rest of you and I agree, some of it is confusing [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif[/img] First of all, the left side of the ship (when facing forward, towards the bow{thought I'd add that in to confuse you even more [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif[/img]}is always the port and the right side of the ship is always the starboard). If you are travelling from Barcelona to Venice, the land will be on your left, port side. I will be travelling from Venice to Barcelona, the land is on the ships right and I have booked Starboard. Unfortunately, when the ship is actually sailing, it will be about 5 miles out to sea and you probably won't see anything (pack binoculars, they may help, I am). The real question lies here...the views are best enjoyed when you are IN port, so it depends on which way the ship will set its anchor. I'm not sure there is any way to know unless you have already sailed this route and even then, it may depend on the number of ships in port that day. Oh, by the way, I'm a Cruise Specialist working for a Cruises only wholesaler. Don't worry, we're all going to have an amazing time, we're on a great ship with a fabulous itinerary [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif[/img]
