Sea of Cortez Whale Watching

We are considering a cruise in March on the Ryndam calling at Loreto, La Paz, Topolobampo and Cabo San Lucas on the Sea of Cortez as well as Mazataln and Pureto Vellarta. We have interest in whale watching and would appreciate comment from any cruiser who has whale watching experience from any of these ports. Recommendations of private boat operaters would be welcome.

If you like a whale watch in a large Zodiac in P. Vallarta:

We loved it. No bathroom on board, so be prepared.

How bumpy was your ride? What time of year did you do that excursion? A friend just mentioned that she had been on one of the Zodiac boats in Hawaii and that the seas were very rough. She said her back hurt for weeks afterward.

We did this trip 2 years ago and saw tons of whales from the ship once we rounded Cabo and got into the Sea of Cortez on our way to Loreto. They were right along side the ship, and we watched until dark. Unfortunately the ship stopped and let down a tender to investigate a large object in the water that they feared was an overturned boat. It proved to be a dead whale. In spite of this we saw many live whales along this stretch, so did not feel the need to go on a separate whale watching excursion.

We have done it twice. Once in January and again a year later in March.

It was absolutely not rough, as P. Vallarta is situated in a large bay.(Bay of banderas).

The water is more or less protected from the Pacific. In general not those big waves.

Of course no quarantees on any sea....

Thanks to all of you who replied and offered helpful links.

Splinter- please tell us the month of the cruise on which you saw many whales right from the ship. Sounds good.
