Cybercabin/WIFI two Laptops ?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how it works...or if it can be done....to use two latops at same time when in your cabin ?

My son and I will both be taking our latops(both have WIFI) on our Navigator cruise in Sept...and as it is 14 nights we were wondering which is the best way cost wise and connection wise for us to both be on our laptops at the same time.

Anyone got any ideas on the best way to go about this please ?

Thanks

You can both be on Wifi at the same time, but I think you'll have to establish separate usernames & passwords. I assume it will all end up billed to the same credit card, so it really should make a difference, pricewise. You may not, however, be able to get a good Wifi signal in the cabin, so you might have to go to a hot spot in a public area to do so.

As for Cybercabin, I suppose there might be some kind of splitter you could use - plug the ship's ethernet cable into the cabin data port and use the splitter to each laptop. The problems with that are (a) I don't really know what I'm talking about, just analogizing to cable TV splitters that allow you to run extra lines off one feed  and (b) you'll end up with a whole mess of cords to deal with. But somebody with far more technological knowledge than I might be able to help you!

Since you specify "in your cabin" we can eliminate wifi. Although there have been some reports that some cabins have been located close enough to a ships wifi hotspots to gain access...Freedom is the only ship with wifi in the staterooms. That would leave you looking at cybercabin which is pretty slow and would probably still require only one user at a time.

If you decide that wifi is your preference you will have to go to one of the ships hotspots. You can use one account for both laptops *if* you log on sepatately, but you will have to create two accounts to both be on the network at the same time (and will be charged for two) as well.

Thanks folks..pretty much like I had figured but thought it best to ask here just incase...ok forever hopefull :D

So I guess I will have to go online when my son is asleep ..cause no way am I paying for two internet accounts for 14 nights...

Although maybe when we are on the Pre-Inaugural of Liberty I might manage to pay for two accounts ...hahah..after all thats only for a night or two.

Thanks for replying ..oh and the laughs ;) ...though I have to say critterchick...I was thinking the same way as you-a splitter or something :D

Hi Liz,

if Liberty will be like Freedom last year, you won´t have to pay for the internet. It was free like everything else on my pre-inaugural on Freedom.:D

Though you had to go to the internet cafe first and set up an account, like you would pay for it but it wasn´t billed. Well it couldn´t have been billed anyway, as we didn´t have to set up an onboard account anyway.

The seapass cards on this cruise didn´t have a a charging privilege. Well of course it wasn´t needed as everything was free anyway.

Only thing you needed money for was casino and shops. The shops took credit card only, no cash and obviously no seapass.

To your Navigator question...

as already said Navigator has no WiFi in cabins, so chances are low you can catch the signal in the room. If you get Cybercabin I guess there would be the possibility to split the signal, though with the bad connections and low speed I wouldn´t do that.

If you want to log on to Wifi simultaneously (sp? ) you would probably need to set up two accounts. If you use it not at the same time you can both use your own computer with the same password and username, just not at the same time.

Oh do you know, I never thought about not having seapasses on Liberty..thanks for that info too.:D

P.S Gunnar...Happy New Year :D

If there is a ethernet connection in your cabin, get a Linksys WTR54GS travel router. It will turn a wired network connection to wifi.

No Ethernet connections in the room. Though the wall socket for CyberCabin is just like an Ethernet Plug/socket connection it is a dial up and not Ethernet:(

You should be able to use a switch to get multiple wired connections in your room. They are pretty cheap, just plug the ethernet cord into a slot on the switch and use two more cables to connect your laptops to the switch. (Like a cable splitter).

You'd still have to log on two computers to the same connection that is set up for one...no? Not sure that's even possible with cybercabin.

How did you get on the pre inaugural cruise? If you don't mind me asking, I mean. I would love to do that once the ship is over here in the USA. Thanks in advance.

Well in my case, all I can say is that I was invited by RCCL.

From what I heard from others onboard it was all Platinum and Diamonds of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Netherlands were invited to this, which resulted in about 800 guests onboard. There was a disclaimer that if too many of the invited would accept not everybody would get a confirmation.

I guess with much much more C&A members in the US, invitations would be more rarely.

I know from others that over here, asking for invitations was of no help. They choose who got one and didn´t respond to requests.

Sorry but I can´t tell more about this as it´s all I know.

However I´ve been very pleased with the invitation and it was a big hassle workwise to get it scheduled but it was sooo worth it.

BTW the original invitation was for an overnight stay while docked in Hamburg. After some rescheduling the dates (which caused more hassle of course) the invitation was to cruise from Hamburg to Oslo. While we had to make the trip back from Oslo on our own expense. Anyway still a great deal.

I got the invite from RCCI UK/Europe in a phone call a few months ago.

I have been trying for two years to get a level playing field so to speak for UK pax with RCCI..we have different rules over here for cancelling, deposits,C & A,Military Progam(dont have)....and so on.

I was chatting with someone from Management on the phone one day....we discussed different issues/happenings/questions with regard to cruising and he said I knew more than him and I laughed and said..."Well I have a lot more free time to read about it on CruiseCritic etc"....and he replied "How would you like if we discuss this further on the Liberty PreInaugural in April" so of course my answer was "Yes please"

And in his last email just before Christmas he said the Official invites should be going out soon....and I am soooo excited.

I am not a TA or involved in any way with cruise travel etc...I just have an addiction to cruising and to RCCI...and I would love to see more people from the UK sail with RCCI.

you could also use a router in the room,it is like a splitter, and regulates the data that is being tranfered to the 2 laptops, hope this helps;)

Like we use a router at home do you mean ?...or am I being completely duh ...wouldnt be a first time when it comes to tech stuff :o

When we cruise on RCI, we always get the Cybercabin, and Brian and I bring our Mac laptops. He is the technogeek of the team---he brings things along (Apple Airport) that enable both of us to be online surfing and checking our mail at the same time. We pay the usual $100 per week.

At this moment I am at work. When I get home, I will ask him to write something about how we do this, and post it here tomorrow, so check back for more info.

I did a little research on travel routers and found this:

http://wifi.consumerelectronicsnet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=63297

There are many others, but this one is cool and quite small. This would allow someone to wirelessly connect two laptops to one broadband connection. The problem is that it requires an Ethernet connector (RJ45) for the cybercabin connection. To the eye, these look like regular telephone connectors (RJ11) but are not interchangeable.

So (bear with me) not having ever employed cybercabin...can anyone tell me if cybercabin is an Ethernet connection or is it a dialup connection that would require only a modem and use a telephone type jack???

If it uses the RJ45 Ethernet connector then this would work well as a mini "in room" personal network.

Cybercabin is a dial up connection. The wall socket uses RJ45 connectors, but it´s a RJ11 you plug in your modem in the computer. It´s definitely NOT an Ethernet connection and you have to dial up to get connected.

NO Modem, NO connection.

I know the plug/socket setup is a little wierd and can be confusing, but that´s what it is and you can´t use it without their cable bringing the RJ45 to an RJ11
