smoking

My family and I are booked on Carnivals Fantasy. One of my sons has asthma and I am concerned about secondhand smoke on the ship. We booked a balcony cabin for fresh air. I read in some reviews that it was hard to avoid smoking. Is this true? Any hint/tips on how to avoid it.

I had quit smoking about four months before we took our Triumph cruise and I was nervous that I would run into a lot of smokers. It turned out that I had very little problems...certainly no more than the days right after I quit.:D

I did find...and I hate to tell you this:eek: ...the worst place for 2nd hand smoke was on our balcony...especially first thing in the morning! But of course every ship is different and you may not have a problem at all.

Hope you have a great and smoke free cruise!

Tom&Deb:)

Here is a rather lengthy thread about the subject of smoking, and particularly smoking on balconies:

(Unless it's been pulled by the time you read this post)

If you type in "smoking" on the search function, you will get many, many threads on the subject. Happy cruising!

The smoke should only be a problem if your balcony neighbor upwind lights up. Balconies usually get enough wind, though, that there shouldn't be a problem of lingering smoke if no one is smoking.

As others have said, avoid the casino and probably any of the enclosed bar areas. Sailings vary as to how many smokers there are, but the casino is a cancer-stick magnet. ;)

since the op is asking for tips to avoid the smoke this is a valid thread and not the typical smoking complaint thread.

first of all it is virtually impossible to 100% avoid the smoke on a cruise ship all the time. its impossible to have a smoke free cruise unless you go on disney or some other smokeless cruise.

inevetably you will encounter times where you will have to walk by a smoking area (the casino) or walk by a bar with smoke coming out. you might walk by a side table or couch that people are smoking at or someone might light up standing or laying next to you.

but all and all the smoke is NOT as bad as most people make it out to be. infact most problems come from isolated 1 on 1 cases of incosiderate smokers smoking in a non smoking section. most smokers are courtious.

so what can you do? here's some pointers. spend your time in the non smoking areas and avoid the smoking permitted areas.

be vigilant where you lay out at. try to get something towards the front of the ship (wind blows front to back obveously). be watchful where you sit your stuff, look around first! if you see smoeone who is puffing away, holding a lighter, see a pack a ciggarettes by their towel or see butts or ashes around, dont lay out there.

its not smoke free but its definitly no bar!

As expected the bars and casino are correctly identified as high smoke areas.

Did not see mention the outdoor deck around the pool. Tables line the perimeter under the deck that goes overhead and those tables can quite often be rampant with smokers.

That sounds great but we are booked for a May Alaskan cruise. That is a trip I have wanted to do even before we started cruising.

March is not a good time for us as that is usually peak of our busiest time of year work wise.
