My QM2/QE2 Tandem Crossing Photos

Crouton

Recommended Posts

Here is a link to some of the photos I took during the April 2004 QM2 Maiden Eastbound crossing in tandem with QE2 and related events.

I think the best way to view the photos is to click on the first one and then use the arrows to proceed to the next photo. This way, you can click again on the photo if you want to see a larger version, which in some cases will be very helpful. You can then click again to reduce the size and proceed.

Alternatively, there is a slide show feature you can select.

I've tried to keep it to photos related to the tandem crossing, ones that came out especially well, and a few the might be of interest to other CC members.

In particular, I hope you get a flavor of what it was like with QE2 alongside.

Wow, what wonderful photos, Tony! They take me right back to those pleasant six days at sea on the world's largest passenger ship.

Thank you for sharing the pics!

As I was on QE 2; it's very nice to see "your view" of the tandem crossing...

I must say you all on the Mary had the better view! icon_biggrin.gif

Thank you for the kind compliment, but I am not an experienced cruiser: I just did a lot of homework/preparation for my one QM2 cruise.

I have no idea what to tell you about the weather in July other than that it could be rainy and cloudy -- unless it's sunny and clear -- and that it might be cold and windy on deck -- unless of course it's balmy and there's no wind at all. icon_wink.gif My only sound advice is to bring layers -- including a hat, gloves, and a water resistant windbreaker. Don't forget your swimsuit, and don't forget to sign the CC logbook in the library!

Since I boarded in New York, I don't know what Southampton's procedure will be like. I know of no one yet who has had their boarding time checked, however, and believe that you will be able to board as early as you want.

Perhaps someone else with specific experience related to your questions could chime in...

Many a truth is spoken in jest! Crouton gave sage advice about the North Atlantic's weather.

When I made my last crossing on the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2, so many years ago she was still steam, it was early August. The weather that crossing was very similiar to the late April QM2 crossing. The air temp was warmer in August, but that led to five days mostly shrouded in fog. You still needed to layer the clothes to walk around the Boat Deck. And the ship still will create her own onboard wind storm as she races across the great North Atlantic!

Darn...I wish that I could be there too!

Thanks for posting these excellent photos. I would have loved to have taken the historic Tandem Crossing. I am a big fan of the Cunard Queens (six sailings on the QE2 and the May 10 cruise on the QM2) and would have enjoyed seeing the two ships together. At least I was able to purchase one of the limited edition Tandem Crossing plates and photos of the two ships together during my recent QM2 cruise. Both ships are wonderful!

I didn't see any offer of a video about the Tandem Crossing being produced for sale while aboard the QM2. I would certainly like to get one. Perhaps one was just made on the QE2.

Is there a phone number on the video to call for further information?

My video of the crossing that I ordered on QE 2 (APR 25 - MAY 1) finally arrived today!

YIPPIE!

Tony,

I saw a video of the tandem crossing (from QE2) for sale on e-bay. It sold for almost 75 pounds.

I don't think one was made on QM2. I didn't see any videographers. Perhaps this was because the QE2 voyage was the last. But I certainly would have bought a QM2 video.

By the way, those limited quantity tandem crossing shirts and hats that we all spent hours in line for were for sale the next week. They finally did sell out by the 3rd day.

75 pounds!!??? Yikes...maybe I should auction my wooden Cunard coffee stirrers after all.

I did see a ship's photographer shooting 'official' video on more than one occasion during the crossing. In addition, I heard directly from my rep that one of the helicopters buzzing around us the night we left New York was hired by Cunard, and I'd even heard that we might get to see those pics/video before we arrived in Soton, but...there were only a few shots... Finally...I'm guessing Cunard also has access to the pics from the press chopper that greeted us off Land's End which must have some spectacular shots of the fly-bys etc....SO, I'm eager to hear what Michael has his hands on.

I'm happy to say that I did not stand in line for those shirts...but breezed in to pick one up 'later that same day' with no wait.

Stay tuned...

Tony

Hi all!

The video is 35 minutes long, with shots of the fireworks & Queen Mary 2 in the dark in New York, lots of New York skyline, interviews with Captain and some crew (swithboard operator, casino staff member, etc), LOTS of onboard footage of crossing, some Cunard history footage (QE 2 launch), a really boring tour of the bridge (I actually nodded off during this sequence!)

No overhead shots from helicopters in New York or UK... all footage is from hand-held camera on QE2.

Almost no shots of Queen Mary 2 sailing along side of us, and no shots/mention of the airshow we had near UK. icon_confused.gif

Also... cheezy! ... lots of stock film of "life on QE 2" that I've seen before in other "Buy this Video of your Trip" videos and Cunard advertising/promo videos.

If you were either on QE 2 for the crossing, and/or a total Cunard nut (I'm both!) the video is "nice to have". It's basically a silly "cruise ship" keepsake that you'd get on any line.

PS: I don't have the tape with me; but I think it's made/produced by a comapny called Image.

I got Image's phone number from my Cunard rep. Here are the details:

Image Photo Services

Miami, FL

305.476.3666

Greg Nusser, ext. 111

approx 9:30a-4:30p Eastern

Image Photo Services Website

Video is QE2 April 25 - May 1, 2004 (n.b. not QM2)

Video Cassette only (no DVD available)

Cost is $35.00 + postage

(mailed from ship -- probably $5-10)

Delivery time 2 -4 weeks.

After ordering mine, I'd suggest ordering by phone via credit card (for clarity about video date/details/price), but you can also order via the website.

Also, re-read mtbny7's post(above)to be sure you'll be happy with the content. His review sounds right on -- including stock video --after talking with Image.

At present, they are only providing video of each QE2 trip, but will be doing same for QM2 down the road.

Crouton -

are your photos of the Tandem Crossing still availble for viewing? I'd very much appreciate seeing them if so. Thank you-
