suzy5565 Posted June 14, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 14, 2007 Have read that lots of people bring an iron, but also heard you aren't supposed to because of a fire hazard. Do they check your luggage to see if you brought one?
ohfan Posted June 14, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 14, 2007 We have taken a travel iron in all our cruises and have not had a problem yet.
alphakitty Posted June 14, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 14, 2007 Please don't bring an iron on your cruise! It is truly a safety hazzard and against the rules. They ban them for a reason you know.
Nancyquilts Posted June 14, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 14, 2007 In the old days we used to bring an iron because it was allowed. Now it isn't allowed because of possible fire, so we don't bring one. Nor candles, either. Nancy
Coolcruise02 Posted June 14, 2007 #5 Share Posted June 14, 2007 I have always cruised with a TRAVEL iron/steamer and never had a problem. It doesn't get very hot, but takes out major wrinkles. It has never been taken out of our luggage and no room steward has said anything in 13 cruises.
Spikesgirl Posted June 14, 2007 #6 Share Posted June 14, 2007 Check the rules and regs of your cruiseline and you will see that an iron is a big no-no. If you want an iron, there are several available in the various laundry rooms. Charlie

beachchick Posted June 15, 2007 #8 Share Posted June 15, 2007 Unless you're on RCCL or X. Even on NCLA, only the Pride of Hawaii has self-serve laundry rooms with special built-in ironing boards and "safety" irons. beachchick
C-Ked Posted June 17, 2007 #9 Share Posted June 17, 2007 The restrictions against irons have nothing to do with how hot the iron plate itself gets. All irons (travel or normal sizes) are fire hazards because of how much power they draw from the outlet. So please, please do not bring an iron! I've had an iron spark on me before due to a poor electrical outlet... I'm not saying that cruise ships have poor wiring, but you never know what might happen. I've had an iron spark on me before due to a poor electrical outlet... I'm not saying that cruise ships have poor wiring, but you never know what might happen. That may be true, but if it is then all the ladies who bring their ultra-powerful hair dryers because the ones on the ship are, well, weeny, are guilty of causing the same fire hazard. Some of those blow dryers draw much more power than a tiny travel iron. I'm not saying bring an iron; of course I'm not. I am saying that this specific reasoning makes no sense. If this is the reason, then high-wattage blow dryers should be banned and confiscated just like travel irons are. beachchick
joyce155 Posted June 18, 2007 #11 Share Posted June 18, 2007 I live in florida and there was a major cruise ship fire in the past few years you should have seen the pictures, this wasn't caused as I remmber by a iron however I would not want to be responsible for the cause of one, especially after seeing how damaged the ship was... truely remarkable.. Jeffsey500 Posted June 25, 2007 #12 Share Posted June 25, 2007 Did they add this rule recently? I called Norwegian Cruise Lines Customer Service and they told me to bring my own. Then Travelocity replys to my email saying absolutley not. I am soooooooooo confused.... They even stated that there are free ones that can be checked out on board. I was hoping somebody can confirm this for the Norwegian Sun, since I don't want to be caught without an iron when I need it.
suzy5565 Posted June 25, 2007 Author #13 Share Posted June 25, 2007 I don't understand why you can SMOKE in the cabins but can't use a travel iron. Many more fires are started from careless smoking than from ironing!
Disneyworld Posted June 25, 2007 #14 Share Posted June 25, 2007 Even at home to get out wrinkles I use a spray called Wrinkle Release. I buy a local store brand, but I think it is Febreze that makes it. It can be found in most grocery stores or Walmart type stores. Just look for Wrinkle Releaser. Just follow the directions. It works great and certainly is not a hazard. Just make sure you pack it in the luggage that you'll be checking in since you can't take spray bottles in your carryon. lambs2 Posted June 25, 2007 #15 Share Posted June 25, 2007 I have a small travel steamer that IS allowed and have brought it on our last three cruises. BUT have nOT ONCE used it! I also bring the Febreeze spray and that does the trick well enough for us!!
beachchick Posted June 26, 2007 #16 Share Posted June 26, 2007 The Wrinkle Release we tried was made by Downy. Many people swear by it, but we found it only somewhat successful. Plus, it's scented and there's no perfume/scent-free option. That was kind of a negative for us. beachchick
