To my fellow-cigar-smokers

I am quite accustomed to be a part of supressed minority: i'm a cigar smoker.;) But be aware that X Galaxy goes even further than the rest of the fleet. You'll be allowed to smoke your cigar only on deck 12, which has two important features:

1. There is, practically, nothing sheltering you from the wind.

2. It's that deck where jogging/walking track is. Imagine how all those running and walking around you react to your cigar smoke.

It's tough even compearing to strict policies of X Mercury. Onboard Mercury you can have your cigar in Michael's Club, at list, in the evening -when card games there are over.

I would never sail on Galaxy again, even though it's a very nice ship otherwise.

If you have any cigar tips - please, share.

Is this something new? It's been 4 years since I've been on Galaxy, but on all Century class ships I've been on (including Zenith last year), many cigar smokers would take a break from the casino and go outside to the port side for a smoke. I always brought an ashtray from the casino and had to exchange it frequently, as the crew never seems to clean that area.

My DW and I both enjoy a cigar after dinner periodically, and are concerned about how we will smoke them on X. We are booked on the Millie for a week in the Caribbean in December, and on the Connie for her April TransAtlantic. Can we enjoy an evening cigar anywhere inside???

I believe it is against the rules to smoke cigars and pipes in staterooms or on balconies. The last time I was on the Millenium we were only allowed to smoke by the open air bar in the aft. It was not always the most enjoyable space to smoke. I am on the Mercury in October and have emailed X asking about Mercury's current policies, but I have received no reply.

We are booked for a future cruise on Galaxy--despite the limitited public areas I assume you can still smoke on the balcony--If not hope DH does not see this thread...

Please don't do that. You prevent everyone around you from enjoying their balconies. The smoke from cigarettes drifts several balconies away, I cannot imagine how many dozens of balconies would be impacted by cigar smoke - and cigars take so much longer to smoke than cigarettes and smell so much stronger. I am afraid many many people would have to avoid their balconies for the entire period you were smoking cigars on yours.

This particular issue is not the topic of the op's post. In addition, it was very recently discussed at length in two closed threads. Do we need to travel down the same road again?

As Cigar Dave might say 'The pleasure police are out in force'....

I have always smoked my cigar on my balcony and it's never been a problem. The first time it is a problem will be the last time I sail on a Celebrity ship!

Maybe its not a problem for you, but do you realize that you are likely disturbing dozens of people?

Of the four Celebrity ships I have cruised, all provided a spot for cigar smokers to enjoy their cigars/pipes. Most of the time, it was on the aft deck(or Michael's Club), but was always in a sheltered spot. Most cruise lines accomodate cigar smokers in some fashion, at least they have on the 13 cruises I have been on......

OF COURSE it's never been a problem for YOU, duh. Trust me - every time a cigar smoker lights one of those ol' stink bombs, it's a problem.

So does this mean you'll be choosing a different cruise line?

As we all know, or most know at least from reading threads on Cruise Critic, people tend not to follow rules very much. In addition, the enforcement of the rules by Celebrity is generally minimal, or non existent.

Again, this topic has been covered stem to stern in a variety of other threads, including some that are now closed. Let's take it for what it is, and move along now.

Thanks!

I think a lot of people don't follow the rules because they don't know what the rules are. And even if the cruise line isn't acting like SS agents in enforcing them, why assume that it's okay to disregard them?

There have been times my wife and I have been on our balcony and just could not take it as someone in the next balcony was smoking cigars. We're perhaps more sensitive to this type of smoke than others, but it is a problem for us. We've not said anything as we were trying to be polite and sensitive to the comfort of others - hopefully they would feel the same way as us.

The bottom line is that there are very few places where smoke, and particularly cigar smoke, won't be bothering others. There are no public areas on Celebrity ships where cigar smoking is allowed indoors.

The only place I know of where cigar smoke is allowed is on the outside aft deck - behind the buffet. But on this area please stay on the port, smoking, side. We've had a couple times when we've tried to enjoy this area, a favorite of ours, when some smokers have decided the rules didn't apply to them and that they didn't need to stay on the smoking side, even when we've, very politely, reminded them that the starboard side of this area is non smoking and suggested they move to open tables on the port side.

As another poster suggested, there may be other areas where the smoke will not bother other patrons, as the areas are generally uncrowded.

I don't know if you are suggesting that I posted it's 'okay' to disregard them. For the record, I did not post that. What I posted is what generally happens when it comes to 'rules'. Good, bad, or indifferent, it is what it is.

To the original poster's point, and despite my ranting above, I too find it strange that the Official place for smoking cigars is the open area on deck 12. It would seem to me that the area aft of the buffet, on deck 11, on the port side, would make more sense - similar to the area on the M-class ships.

In fact I could have sworn that they were selling cigars in that area on the Galaxy, but I guess I must be getting that confused with the M-Class ships.

Pipe and cigar smoking is permitted only on deck 10 aft, from 8:30pm to midnight each night, not in staterooms or private balconies.

That is good to hear. That would really frustrate me if I was trying to enjoy my balcony and someone in a nearby balcony was puffing away on a cigar.

I think that the majority of smokers don't try to be disrepectful on purpose; I just don't think they realize how bad and offensive the smoke is to many people until they become non-smokers themselves.

On Jewel--Royal carib they seem to have a great solution on radiance Class ships .They have a great lounge for smokers at night after a certain hour--they have strong vents & air cleaners & by the next day the smell is gone--- Too bad they took away the cigar bar designed Michaels clubs-- that was the best place with such a lovely humidor...But they traded it in because they were lacking another space on their ships for a piano bar...If those are truly the rules on Galaxy & DH won't be happy with Deck 12, then we will have to look into booking a different ship....but I think you can do what you want in your own cabin?????

I too miss the Michael's Clubs as they were originally designed: as Cigar Bars. They were well ventilated and kept the smoke from bothering people in other areas. Since their demise and conversion to Piano Bars, I have lost some of my enthusiasm for Celebrity. Most other ships offer some place indoors and comfortable to enjoy a smoke. Crystal has a small, well appointed smoking club room on both of their ships and Princess has a Churchill's Lounge on almost every ship. While I would never smoke a cigar in my cabin, I have enjoyed a morning pipe en suite and have never had a complaint nor any comment from the staff. The only other cruise line that enforces their strong anti-smoking policies is Oceania, and because of that, they will not be getting my business again.

No, this is taken directly from Celebritys FAQ on their website: "Cigarette smoking only is allowed in suites/staterooms." It likely would be hard for them to adequately remove the stench of cigars for the next passengers. I know I would not want to be in a cabin where people had recently smoked cigars. I know hotels launch hefty fines for people who violate the smoking rules, so I would imagine Celebirty would charge the seapass card a deep cleaning fee for people who abuse this policy and cause the future occupants of the room a lot of heartache.
