I'm not sure, but after reading many of these posts, I believe it's time for a true expert to give us an education regarding bacteria, viruses, superviruses, anti-bacteria sprays, anti-bacterial gels, and super germs. While he/she is at it, they might tell us all of the reasonable measures to take to avoid norovirus.

Until that time, it's important to let others do what they feel they need to do, and to be sensitive to their fears.

Happy cruising to all!

Below is a quick article from the CDC. Please note their recommendations are to just simply wash your hands. They also have other articles on their site about viruses. Another point to remember if you are purchasing these items is they only prevent bacteria. Most of the illnesses onboard ships are virus's so these items may not help. I really don't want to go on a cruise and smell someone's lysol all over the place, its bad enough cleaning with it at home.

But when their fears are unfounded and contribute to the greater bad (as opposed to the greater good), I really have trouble being sensitive to them. I used an example several posts back of "do you disinfect the menu", etc., and no one ever responded. Unless you live in a bubble you are exposed to germs all the time. Are you going to disinfect every chip you use in the casino? The pool attendant hands you a towel - are you going to disinfect where he touched the towel, and spray down your chair? I could go on and on with examples, and since the obvious answer is "no", why bother with it at all? Why not just wash your hands with soap and water, then KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR NOSE, EYES, AND MOUTH (germs have to have a portal inside your body), and let your immune system do its job?

First of all, I'm not that concerned with viruses on a cruiseship. Not much you can do about them. If they're there, they're there. All you can do is wash your hands and hope for the best. However, bacteria from e-coli, staph, or even athlete's foot can be gotten rid of with a quick spray. Why not? You don't know who was in that room before you, what their hygiene habits were or whether or not the cleaning people were cleaning your bathroom counter with the same rag they cleaned your neighbor's toilet with. I wonder how many of you that discount using lysol drink out of the glasses in your cabin's bathroom? Leave your toothbrushes out?? Ever think about what's spraying all over THAT room when you flush??? I don't know about anyone else, but I tend to be much more relaxed and "unvigilant" about things when I'm in my "personal space". That's why I like to start out knowing that I have a lesser chance of getting sick than if I didn't spray. And btw, I'm not spraying Lysol all over my house; A regular cleaning does just fine. But in a hotel room or cruise ship cabin...........I'm spraying!

...However, then you need to deal with germy feet which should not be a problem unless you or your significant other suck each other's toes....

Doesn't everyone?

We don't spray our home or our kids with Lysol. But we have been on ships that have had the noro, and believe that precautions make sense. Not getting the noro and not having your vaction spoiled is well worth taking the precautions.

Use the Lysol, use your knuckles, avoid what is reasonable - it won't be everything but it will help. And do wash your hands and always use the hand sanitizer when going into the dining areas.

Wow! I've been away for a few days and this thread has evolved way off the orignial concept, as tends to frequently happen!

To clarify MY concept of clean, for OUR purposes...I don't see anything wrong with having a little can of disinfectant to give my bathroom and possibly the telephone receiver a touch of spray when I first take occupancy. Touching items in public that others also touch, and then using a disinfectant hand wipe to MY hands (certainly not the world around me) is common sense, not obsessive - compulsive behavior as has been implied. Haven't YOU ever been taught to wash your hands prior to sitting down to a meal?

My mention of not touching your eyes and/or mouth without washing your hands, after sharing public spaces is also comon sense. This practice is taught in all hygiene classes to all children including now to cough into the crook of your arm, or sneeze into a kleenex, instead of your hand. When traveling, we often don't have access to soap and water as readily as we do within our own homes, and it stands to reason thereby, having hand wipes along is not excessive, just more convenient.

Now, things may have changed since I went to nursing school. But if I acknowledge this subject correctly, the concept of personal hygiene and cross contamination (and THIS is what we are talking about) has become even more stringent than in years past. We all have our different routines and standards of personal hygiene. Unless someone comes up to you and sprays YOU with Lysol, I really don't feel that private observances should cause anyone undue worry! Heaven knows, there are enough slovenly people in the world to cancel out the more fastidious ones.

Oh, and by the way, my original reason for this post was to mention that the Sam's near me doesn't seem to carry the travel sized cans of Lysol.

Phone receivers is a good mention....Thank You!

For others who speak of family/familiar germs....I believe we are accustomed to our own environment and those are the ones that most live with without affect.

I look at it this way: When restaurants are required to do a three step sanitization process of dishes, (let's not forget the hot, hot, hot, plates at the buffet either) and cruise ships are passing out more than soap when guests board or enter the dining room, nay sayers are not at all going to influence me to stop enjoying the benefits of use or of the clean fresh scent within my own cabin.

Once again, we are talking about cruise ships, not our family/familiar germ environment, so the exposure is pretty big.

As for Lysol, I really like to change my sheets and spray my bed and pillows as part of the change process.

I love this! After I lysol our room I take a ziploc baggie and put the remote control in it and close it up. My dh and kids think I am a genius...

That is indeed a genius idea and thanks for sharing it!

Your welcome! I went to Sam's Club near me but they did not have them, so I ordered them from Minimus.com. I just have to have them to have in my purse and to give to my daughters. We also all have a pump bottle of Purell in our cars for our hands after using shopping carts, pumping gas, drive thru's , etc.

Hi all,

To all those naysayers on cleaning or spraying your cabin or hotel room, I say...I'm not a germaphobe at all, merely practice (and teach my children) good hygiene, wash before eating and keep a relatively clean home. I don't use Lysol or bleach daily in my home. And I agree that we need to be cautious about not overdoing antibac products in our lives, so that our bodies develop natural defenses.

However...when I'm on a vacation that I have saved for months or years to take and struggled to take the time away from work and other activities, I REALLY want to minimize the chance that I or my family members (especially my kids...groan...nothing worse than having a sick child away from home) will pick up a bug that will hit while on vacation. If you have ever gotten a stomach flu or bad cold while traveling, TRUST me, you'll do whatever you can to avoid it.

Lastly, for my other friends who take a few minutes to clean your cabins...I have also found Febreze Antimicrobial (not available in a trial size, I don't think) spray. This is designed to "kill odor causing bacteria." I spray it on bedspreads, carpets, fabric shower curtains, window treatments. It has a very light fragrance. Who knows how much it really helps kill germs, but it does take odors out of the room and fabrics, and makes me feel better!

Happy and healthy travels everybody!

Lynne
