We are going to be on the Nautica April of 08 and one of our ports is Keelung / Taipei Taiwan. We will have 1/2 day that we are thinking of looking around Keelung on our own. Does any one know if the port is close to the city and any suggestions on what we might see on our own.

Thanks Phil

Keelung is 40 minutes by train to Taipei. Just buy your tickets at the window for the next arriving train, and if you don't happen to get a seat, it isn't a very long ride anyway. As long as you don't travel during rush hour, you should be able to get a seat.

Things to do in Keelung: Miaokou food stalls (walking distance from train station), Zhongzheng Park overlooking the harbor, take a taxi there b/c it's a bit of a climb) or Bisha Fishing Port for fresh seafood. Bisha is a 15~20-min. taxi ride from Keelung; not sure if it's easy to catch a cab back downtown, though. You could take a bus there from Keelung.

The public hot springs are about a 5~10-min. walk from MRT Xinbeitou. The road slopes slightly upward, but only very slightly----it isn't difficult to walk there

The port of Keelung for the city of Taipei are often confused on cruise itineraries, they are 40 minutes away. See a Keelung Cruise terminals map

Keelung actually has its own hot spring, not widely published: The Wave Spring Resort, open from 1000-2200 hours.

Rather than go to Taipei and Beitou you can also consider Jinshan along the Northeast coast with many private hotels and hot springs on the road from there up to Yangmingshan. The biggest is Tienlai Hot Spring resort just outside Jinshan, offered on some cruise tours. About a 30 minutes drive from the port, you can do it on your own.

If you go to Taipei, don't miss the wonderful museum there. Most of the items were brought over by Chang in 1948 from Beijing.

We had a day and a half there and spent half a day going north of the port to a seaside park with wonderful geological formations. Amazing. sill, I would go for the museum.

Pretty old post ... coming to life again :p

Yeh Liu Geo Park is the popular park of natural "reefs" shaped over millions of years, in Xinbei, northwest of Keelung City - about 15 to 20 minutes in a taxi ... did our escorted tour in a motorcoach; and, about 45 minutes east of Taipei. Admission fees are charged & there are many local seafood restaurants across the parking lot, plus ethnic food ... and, a 7-11 for all the essentials.

The National Palace Musuem is great, can easily spend 1/2 day or more there - was very crowded with mostly mainland Chinese tour groups when we visited  - don't forget to take one of the self-directed audio wand while touring, with choice of language.

At the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, you can watch the changing of the military honor guards, performing their precision drills.

As for these hot springs - beware of the natural, strong sulfur odor as it is volanic in nature - and, all "bathers" must wear proper swimwear and headgear (sold by shops nearby ... required by local regulations, as in shower caps) When finished, you want to make sure to shower first before leaving to do anything else at those facilities.

These, however, are best enjoyed doing a land tour and not rushing with a port stop for the day, as one would be rush, a lot.

The pier is in downtown Keelung. The market and a nice Chinese temple are only about a 4 or 5 block walk from the pier.
