FOS...fresh or salt water pools?

On some show on Travel Channel a few years ago they said that virtually all pools on newer (last 10 years?) ships are fresh. As a by-product of the ships systems and the desalination plants they actually end up with a surplus of fresh water. I don't recall the technical reason except that it was something about waste hot water from cooling the engine systems which was cooled a steam distilation process that resulted in a lot of fresh water. At least that's the way I recall it. Especially overnight while the ship was underway but few passengers were using water. I guess they ar enot supposed to dump the heated water back into the ocean...not environmentally PC.
