Luaus

We're trying to decide between one of the luaus on Oahu (Germaine's or Paradise Cove) and the Kauai Coconut Beach Luau. I've read plenty about the Oahu luaus - has anyone been to the Kauai Luau? What's it like? Recommendations?

We did Old Lahina Luau on Maui and really enjoyed ourselves. We're going back to Hawaii in 2005 and we're planning to go there again. It's been rated as the best luau in Hawaii.

Seats are assigned and given on a first come first served basis. The further out you book the more likely you will get a fron row seat. I'm about to book for March 2005 right now.

The cost right now is $82pp.

Just wanted to say that you would probably be better served to book online as soon as possible. The Old Lahaina Luau tends to sell out at times. The luau to the best of my knowledge is not offered through the ship. We were on the Infinity in Nov 2003 and it was not one of the shore excursions. I would also point out that the entertainment on the ship the first night in Maui was a local Halau(hula troupe). The web site is link

Regarding what to do during the day...

We loved our day at the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium. We saw more fish and had a much better time here than we did on our snorkel tour the day before. There were several small school groups visiting the day we were there. They really made our day. They each had a check off sheet to look for different species and they were so excited when they found one. But the best part was when we entered the shark encounter at feeding time. One of the divers had a 2 way radio and he told the group of kids (and us since we were lucky enough to be there!) about what he was doing, how much everything ate etc. Then the kids had a chance to ask him questions. Their questions were really funny and not what I expected... things like, "how did you get in the tank?", "how do you breathe?", "how do you get out of the tank?". I was cracking up listening to them!

Maui Ocean Center is a lot of fun. Hanging out at the many beaches on Maui, visiting Haleakala Crater, doing the Road to Hana, taste-testing pineapple wine at the Tedeschi Winery in Ulupalakua, visiting Iao Needle, and art-shopping in Lahaina are all good options as well.

The Aquarium is a "don't miss". Regarding the luaus....I doubt the one on Kauai is even an option unless you are staying overnight there. Therefore, I'd do one on Maui instead of Oahu.

I have heard and read that the "best luau in Hawaii is the Ola Lahina. FYI I just called after reading this thread to book a reservation for July 23. The nice young lady that answered said that they were sold out. However, when I visited the web site I was successful in booking for that eve. I called back and asked why and they said that a certain number of seats were reserved for folks accessing the web site. Thought I would pass this on as it might be helpful.

This doesnt help looking for sunshine, as her night was sold out for phone bookings, but I booked mine for this July in January and found that when you book online you pay upfront. If you make a phone ressie they let you pay there. If you are booking way out like I was, you might prefer to not have it show up on your credit card right away.

Looking for sunshine-
are you on Pride of Aloha that week? We have a little roll call going on the NCL Roll Call forum if you are interested.

 • 2 weeks later...
We were in Maui 2 summers ago and had the best time. The Maui Aquarium was great. The Old Lahaina Luau was awesome.

If you are looking for something OUTSTANDING, get the Frommer's Maui Guide and follow Road 30, the Honoapiilani Highway. It's very narrow and sometimes scary, but definately worth it. The guide points out stops along this 20 mile stretch where you can stop and walk down to waterfalls and lava rock pools. My husband swam in over a dozen waterfalls and we were the only ones around. Unbelievable. If you go, stop in the Old Kahakulaa Village for fresh banana bread. You won't regret it.

While in Lahaina, stop by Cheeseburger In Paradise for some great food. And if you get the chance, catch the show at Warren & Annabelles.

Have fun whatever you decide. ~Kim
