Do you tip on excursions?

Then why don't you get out of Cleveland and so set up a boat charter in the islands? :p

I tip based on service provided. I also hate feeling that if you don't tip, you won't get back to the ship.

We've now done the Horseback Ride & Swim in Grand Turk on 3 consecutive cruises. I haven't seen those guys being tipped at all. A few did tip the driver on our 1st excursion, and he provided a good island tour as we drove, both there and back (it's at the far end of the island from the port).

But I didn't see ANYONE giving tips to the guys where we rode. These guys are wonderful! They match up the riders and horses, they escort you around, they take your cameras and take photos of you while you're riding, they get your horses galloping/swimming in the water...

And people weren't tipping! Why? Because it cost about $90 pp so they figured it was already expensive enough?

Just as with the cruise itself, if you can't afford to tip for good service, then maybe you should reconsider what you do with your time.

I understand the boat costs gas and maintenance, but they're still making a good buck doing something fun that they love. That's easy money going sailing for six hours a day and making that much.

You've just underscored my point.

Why is how much money they make a concern of yours??? If they make decent money, does that take away from you paying your bills at the end of the month??

If they weren't making what you assume is good money, would you tip them then, even if the service was exactly the same??

Although I'm sure some jobs are better than others, it's still work. Putting up with drunk, obnoxious tourists all day can't always be easy.

How can you make judgements on how much someone 'deserves' to make? I guess if the job is something you consider fun, then the salary at the end of the day should be nothing extravagant, or at least not more than what YOU make..you having a 'real' job and all. I'm assuming that you think the only people who should be tipped are those who suffer horrible jobs. And the only people who deserve tips are the ones who earn way too little...service has nothing to do with tipping...just how miserable the worker is.....correct?

I tip. I tip less for poor service - great for outstanding service. having waited tables through college, I know the value of good service and tips. I don't care what they make on the "front", I wish to express my gratitude for a service that they perform for me. In this case it is for helping to teach me about their country and culture, or helping to make sure I am doing something fun and enjoyable, but safe.

Tip? You betcha!

How much totally depends. Depends how good the guide was, how long the tour was, how much the tour was and whether he works for someone or is the proprietor of the business.

On the few ship tours we were on, the guide obviously wasn't into his job. Wasn't very friendly nor informative. The tour itself was like $60 pp and I think we tipped him $5 pp.

The other private excursions we've been on were AWESOME...two were with the proprietors of the business (both were around $30 pp, and I think we tipped an extra $20 total). The other one was a private excursion through a tour company (the driver/guide worked for them) and we tipped him $20 per couple plus he got our leftover beer and soda we had purchased (in Cozumel, LOL).

If drunk obnoxious guests were such a problem they'd stop offering the free booze.

Some people get offended so easily.

I may have an objection about the voting system but that doesn't mean I DON'T vote, the same as my voicing an opinion about tipping doesn't mean I WON'T tip. Calm down please. :)

Oh NO he didn't!? What did you do?

Due to the locale,I actually did kick in a little more. We were in a very remote area after rafting white water on the Great River. At the end the other guides had already gathered and begun drinking.I was with my DD and her boyfriend and my DW.I really just wanted to get in the van and return to the ship. The rafting was fun and he did a good job,but the last quarter mile of the trip was a buildup to the tip. I am done with Jamaica, never felt comfortable there while off the ship.

I tip for service..... PERIOD

If a trip is owner operatied - not so much of a tip -- they should charge what they want to make...... if it was great, I will throw in some extra

Why does everyone feel that people deserve a tip..... I just don't get it. I am paying for a service - I get it...

Mexico is the worst for the begging for tips -- more so, demanding tips! They tick me off and get a much smaller tips that the ones who just say, "hope you had a great time"...."come back and see us"

We always tip something. More for the better guides. In Costa Rica we went white water rafting. Had the best excursion we have had to date. Our raft guide was wonderful. At the end we gave her 20.00 for the two of us. Her mouth dropped open, and she started to cry. She said nobody has ever tipped before! She said "do you know how much money this is here?" Thank you so much! My sister and I looked at her and couldn't believe her reaction! 20.00 bucks (big deal!) and you would have thought we just gave her a million!
