mdmgso Posted March 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2008 From other threads, I understand the cruise terminal is not far from Tallinn old town (2 miles?). I also understand that the taxi's will rob you if given the chance. Is there an alternative (other than walking )? Where is the best place to catch a taxi back (I assume it will be some place outside of the Old Town.
California Native Posted March 23, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 23, 2008 It;s not a cruise terminal, it's just a dock. No buildings Taxi's will be outside the security perimeter.. take it up to old town and then walk down, it's not that hard a walk back to the ship as it's all down hill The ship does have a shuttle that goes back and forth to lower town, BUT my suggestion is much more efficient since you have limited time in port! http://when.do.we.leave.googlepages.com/balticcruiseportinformation
kruzseeka Posted March 24, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 24, 2008 It's nothing like 2 miles - I think no more than 1 mile. You can see the town from the berth so you can't get lost - but as the other poster said, it is uphill into town but only the last bit once you get to the big tower. It's pretty flat until that point.
tiqittaq foo Posted March 25, 2008 #4 Share Posted March 25, 2008 Anyone has an idea approximately how much a taxi ride will cost from the Dock to Toompea (Upper town) thank you
California Native Posted March 25, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 25, 2008 It was 10 euros for up to 4 people in the taxi... Have a look at my website for further tips including a checklist for Tallin on the things to see and do! Other ports are also mentioned and I have my photos included! Enjoy! http://when.do.we.leave.googlepages.com/balticcruiseportinformation

It is mentioned on the Tallinn website that the Tourist Ticket is available at Terminal A. Is this at the docks the cruise ships use? You mention there are no buildings where your ship was. There is a free sightseeing tour included in the Tallinn card that I am interested in starting the day out with. Will I need to get in to the city tourist office to buy the card? Since the tour leaves from Terminal A, I am hoping to just buy the card there and jump on the bus. Anyone have experience with this? Also, the Tallinn Card includes an Audio Guide of the Old Town. Has anyone used this? I have Rick Steve's book which I hear is a good guide, so I am wondering which is better to use. Thanks!
California Native Posted April 5, 2008 #8 Share Posted April 5, 2008 maybe my memory is going... but I really don't remember seeing a building... BUT maybe they have built it in the last year.... that's always a possibility! A free sightseeing tour is always great, but if you read the Rick Steves Walking Tour and other books on Tallin I think you should be fine! There is a T1 in Lower Town around the corner and down the street a tad from City Hall, BUT it didn't open until 9am.. which could throw a wrench in your timing. If the site you were looking at has an email, I would send them one to clarify everything... Have a wonderful trip! K.
Ultima Thule Posted April 7, 2008 #9 Share Posted April 7, 2008 It is mentioned on the Tallinn website that the Tourist Ticket is available at Terminal A. Is this at the docks the cruise ships use? Terminals A-D are used by the ferries to Finland and Sweden. http://www.ts.ee/?k=3&p1=10&p2=204 Cruise ships are docking just outside the top edge of this map (note the cruise gate symbol on the map). The Old town is on the left edge of the map. http://www.ts.ee/?k=3&p1=10&p2=215 http://www.ts.ee/_up/image/vanasadam/aero2007vanasadam.jpg On this map you can see the cruise ship berths (24, 25) http://www.ts.ee/_up/file/sadamate_plaanid/oldcity_eng.pdf
GACRUISER456 Posted April 7, 2008 #10 Share Posted April 7, 2008 Thanks! If I am looking at everything right, it seems like when we get off the ship we will really walk right past Terminal A & B if we choose to take the sightseeing tour. Thanks for locating these websites!

Read a bit further into the link provided and you'll discover a pretty funny take on cruise passengers. And bonus - a new word for Trivial Pursuit! nabby Posted April 9, 2008 #12 Share Posted April 9, 2008 We will be in Tallinn on a Sunday. We plan to do the walking tour, but does anyone know if we will have limited access to places of interest? Also, are shops open on Sunday?
