Pacific Ocean Reports - SPRING CONDITIONS

Looking to get any sea conditions from folks between San Diego and Vancouver. With all the repo cruises happening this is a good place to report how your seas were. Choppy, smooth, rough, sea-sick bags galore:eek: Windy, calm, storms, sunny? Share your sea conditions with the rest of us (some looking forward to the repos would like to hear!)

We departed the golden gates Southbound in Spring during a storm. It was rough! We had the patches so we were OK. But we were in the minority as the dining room and theatre were wiped out - everyone was sick. The good news: we had the ship to ourselves.

 

Although Magellan named it Pacific (peaceful) - it is normally at least a little rough - but if wind or weather pick up, could be very rocky. We usually don't get many storms after Easter - but we had BIG wind today, unseasonably cold and I suspect surf is up.

 

Much will depend on your weather - but if clear skies with little wind, on the Pacific one should still expect some rough waters - especially central CA northbound.

Have done 2 coastals. Southbound on Norwegian Star Vancouver - LA. Day one,

sunny and fairly warm for September, calm seas. Day 2, thick fog and flat calm seas.

Northbound in May on Emerald Princess LA - Vancouver. Day one - Force 7-8 winds, a bit bumpy,

not much ship movement. Day 2 - mild and little wind, smooth sailing.

 

Mostly it is the luck of the draw. These cruises are still sailing over or near the continental

shelf, so the seas can be different from mid-ocean They are either spring or fall, so

not as prone to rough weather as in winter off the coast. ON the other hand, not

subject to summer weather for temperature, although there can still be winds, often from

different directions as the Pacific High moves northward.

Best Advice - go on the cruise, take whatever preventive measures work for you and

your party and try to think about enjoying the trip rather than worrying

about getting sick. There is much to be said about the power of positive thinking

when it comes to motion sickness.

We've had two BIG storms with lots of wind (and snow) the past three or four days, but it looks to be calming down to more seasonal conditions within the next week or ten days. It will be rough between here and Vancouver, no matter when you are coming, you can count on it.
