Dolphins Swimming by ship.....

Recommended Posts

How many of you have seen the dolphins swim next to are near the ship?

And where were you? What time of day?

I really would love to see this - but have seen nothing but the flying fish.

Don't get me wrong - they are very cool and I love watching them - but

really want to see the dolphins. :D

We saw some dolphins on the Freedom last April (western Carib) , can't remember where we were. I see dolphins all the the time on my way to work when I'm stopped at a draw bridge. They love those boats going through the bridge:) I don't like seeing the boats .. all I can think is "I'm going to work and these lucky people are going out fishing ..sheesh:rolleyes:"

We saw dolphins out of Cozumel once but on our cruise last January on Costa Magica we saw humpback whales while we were docked in Grand Turk. Now THAT was an awesome sight!

Yes that would be awesome! Whales, Dolphins, Turtles, Marlins - I would love to see them while cruising (living free - not at a port excursion). Well - I'll keep my eyes peeled on my next cruise - maybe the 3rd time will be the charm......

I love dolphins! We saw them on our Mexican Riviera cruise, going into Puerto Vallarta. Saw them again on our 2nd cruise in the Western Caribbean, on a sea day. Didn't see any last cruise to Eastern Caribbean.

I've never seen any flying fish, though. :(

We seen a shark from our balcony of the hotel in Miami (have it on video) the day before a cruise in Dec 03.

When we were on our cruise in Sept 04 we had to go into Galveston Tx and we had dolphins playing while we were cruising into the port. It was awesome they were jumping almost like they were trying to see which one could jump the highest. I hope we see this when we leave Galveston in Nov 09

We have seen dolphins several times while cruising into and out of Galveston, and while at the pier. While seated outside at Fisherman's Warf late one afternoon we saw dophins leaping high into the air right there in front of us.

We recently did a harbor tour in Galveston and the captain told us that the dolphins there were Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins, that the ones in the harbor are mothers with their babies. The mothers raise their young for 3 years and then have another one. The males only come into the harbor to breed and then leave the harbor. We had 4 mothers and their babies escorting us around the harbor that morning. It was pretty cool.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but it's such a neat story... :)

We live on the Gulf Coast, so we go out in our boat searching for dolphins quite often. One day, we actually had a dolphin come up to our boat and let us pet it. It would roll over on it's back and we'd rub it's belly, then it would swim away, and come back and we'd pet it's head... it was unbelievable. We have pictures, but they're not digital. I never would have thought it could happen in the wild. We do have a lot of dolphin-watch boats that will take people out and feed the dolphins so they will come close to the boat- apparently some have gotten quite used to people. Anyway, I'll never forget it.

I have cruised 16 times and have seen dolphins swimming near the ship several times. The most memorable time was on a Pacific Coastal cruise on the Norwegian Sky in 2000. About an hour away from San Francisco, there were hundreds of dolphins leaping in groups of 2, 3, & 4 coming towards the ship. I was on a forward, upper observation deck. There were just a few of us out there early in the morning. They literally came in waves. My sister when she came out on deck the ship's staff told her to go aft to see them.

The "show" lasted about 20 min. I didn't have my camera with me. Sheri told me she saw a lot of them, but she said seeing them approach the ship was probably a better experience.

My mom was with us on this cruise and she bought a Swarovski Crystal figurine of a dolphin jumping in the waves. That started my Swarovski Crystal collection of wild life I have seen while on cruises. The dolphin is my largest piece and my most fantastic memory.

I hope the rest of you get to see some dolphins while on a cruise.

Fortunately, I live at the Jersey Shore and in the mornings...when I am at the beach on summer mornings....I see dolphins....But I have always wanted to see whales. Our last cruise out of Galveston, my husband got his morning coffee and went out to find a nice quiet chair while I took our girls into the pool...and sure enough, he saw a pod of whales jumping and "playing" on the side of the ship. I hope to see that one day:)

I bought the video of our cruise on Holiday in September 2006, and the camera crew had caught some dolphins swimming and jumping off the port side during line-up for the "synchronized swimming" activity.

That one scene is worth the price of the video. It and the ice sculpture are the only parts I have watched more than once.

We were on the Pride to the Mexican Riviera in May and saw dolphins several times during that week. It was great! The best was during dinner (6pm) after leaving Cabo San Lucas. Our table was at the very back of the dining room next to the windows. We had a great view of them during dinner. There were atleast 50 of them playing in the wake of the ship. It was so cool to see.

Oh yeah! In all the cruises we've taken, we only saw them once--while on the LEGEND in the Gulf of Mexico. Coolest sight ever! It was a huge school of them, and they were jumping...and jumping...and jumping. WOW!

We felt so lucky to have seen them.

It was somewhere between Progresso and Cozumel...if I am remembering correctly...it was 2 summers ago.

Thanks for the info, LisaT12! That gives me something else to look forward to at sea on my next cruise.

During our last day at sea on the Summit sailing back to Vancouver, we encountered a large pod of Pacific white side dolphins. There were at least 50 or more swimming along with us. I have photos with ten or more leaping out of the water at once. I knew it was something special when crewmembers rushed to the railing to take pictures. It was amazing.

The first time I ever saw dolphins was on the old Home Lines Atlantic on our way from NY to Bermuda, & it was right after daybreak & I was walking on an upper deck near the bow & there was a fairly large school of dolphins swimming & jumping with the front of the ship...it was very exciting but there was no one else to share it with! No one was up except me with my coffee! That was the only time I've seen them at sea. However, every time we're in Tortola we see them in the harbour when the ship is either docking or already docked. Also saw them as the NCL Majesty was sailing away from Charleston. Very cool.
