Doing Laundry onboard?

OK..I was told it was $2 to wash, $2 to dry, and $2 for 1 packet of soap or fabric softener. Do you pay this with cash? What hours is the laundry room open? How many washers/dryers do they have? I'm asking all these questions, not because I want to do laundry aboard a ship while on vacation! LOL but because I'm trying to keep my packing of clothing down so it fits in one bag! TIA

Yes, you use cash.

I'm almost certain the laundry room is open 24/7.

There will be at least 2 washers and 2 dryers. One iron and board.

About midweek, there will be a laundry service.....one bag for $15. The cabin steward will take it from your cabin and deliver back...usually the next day.

The laundry bag special is only for underwear, socks, t-shirts. It's not for any type of delicate items.

The machines in the laundry room take quarters only. You can bring a roll or get one from the casino.

I forget if the laundryf is open 24/7 on Carnival. However I am 100% positive the hours are limited on Princess..... and I think such is the case on Carnival as well.

I have not used it in a while, I now get Laundry wash/fold as a perk.. BUT, back when I was required to pay for wash and fold I DID! I found it more than worth the cost. Do you REALLY want to hassle with doing laundry on a cruise.??!!?? I did ONCE or Twice and said the heck with this... after that, I partook in the wash and fold service. (On Carnival and every other line I sail with)

Wait for the "bag special" and cram as much stuff into the bag as possible. I have found anything short of a "dry clean only" type clothing is just fine. If you will put it in a washing machine at home, it can go into the bag.

If I recall, although the wash machine is $2 and the dryer is $2 in reality you needed to put $4 into the dryer if you wanted the clothes dry and not just sorta dry. Then there is the hassle with soap, buy it for $1 a box or drag your own along..... see what I mean.. its a hassle.

Take less clothes and the money you save not paying the extra baggage charge on the airline will pay for the wash and fold service.. meanwhile you get to enjoy more of your cruise and not hang around washing/folding clothes.

The laundry bag special is for anything you put in the bag......they don't sort "delicate" from your jeans and t-shirts. If you put it in that bag, it goes in a washing machine... It's up to you to sort.

For some reason, I actually enjoy doing laundry on a cruise! We bring a mesh collapsable laundry basket that they sell at the dollar stores for our dirty clothes.... works out great!

Costs are $2.00 for wash, $2.00 to dry, and $1.00 for soap. I usually use two washers, two dryers, so it costs a roll of quarters, which I get from the Pursars (or from the slot machines!)

The last three ships I was on, The Legend, Victory and Liberty, had updated dryers that did not require more than one cycle to dry the clothes.

With three kids, this really helped us during the week!

I really like to put clothes from a beach/swimming trip in the washer and dryer.

I also carry the small packets or detergent and a few dryer sheets. Beats having wet short and t-shirts hanging in the cabin. I will also put in a few other items.

I just got off the Liberty last week. My cabin was next door to the laundry room. It did at some point close during the night as the door was closed then reopened in the morning, but I didn't really notice the time.

Everything was $2, single use laundry soap, single use softener, washer dryer. I did a couple loads and did not have to have to use more than one dryer cycle for each load. Quarters only.

On the Spirit, the laundry rooms I went to each had two washers and four dryers. I think it was closed one day when we were in port. Usually we have to spend $4 for each to load to get the clothes dry enough. As for the detergent, we purchased a bottle of it before we got on the ship because we already planned on doing quite a few loads of laundry for the week.

Thanks to all of you who responded. I found a set of three small travel sink packets of tide at walmart for $1. Not for the washer but the sink which I thought I could wash my bras and maybe a bathing suit. I also bought the Downy Wrinkle Release which I read on here somewhere was great to bring. I love this website it's wonderful! :)

Another option is to take powdered detergent in a baggy, I mark mine well so that the inspectors won't think it's cocaine. I've also put it in an M&M container, one of the plastic kind you find in the snack section as you check out of the grocery store.

The added perk is eating the M&Ms before using the container. :)

LMAO........You are too funny!

I have a small plastic powdered diet drink mix container I can use, but I have to buy powdered detergent, as I only use liquid at home! LOL

That's a great idea, too. I don't like taking dirty clothes home in the suitcase, since most of my clothes need to be hung to dry we do laundry on the ship instead of sending it out.

On the Liberty in February, a lady purchased softener from the machine in the laundry room. She found out it was liquid softener instead of the dryer sheet she thought would be available. So, if you prefer using dryer sheets, you might bring some from home just in case.

Another reason for bringing dryer sheets: a lady on another board said placing a dryer sheet in tennis shoes would help with the smell  . I'm going to give that a try on our next cruise :) .

In 13 days we leave for a 12 night cruise to Europe and 3 nights pre-cruise = 15 nights total. I have packed my laundry soap - Target had sample 1 load packs for .79 and 2 rolls of quarters. You can also get them at the casino. The problem there is..... I throw them in a slot machine before they make it to the laundry room.

I am packing for 1 week to save on room and so I'll have room to bring things back from Europe. I may have to use the laudry special on this trip.
