Chair Hogging crackdown

I'm happy to hear that RCCL is FINALLY enforcing the chair policy. But like other posters I will be really annoyed if I go to the ladies room or take a dip in the pool to come back to find my stuff gone! I always leave pool stuff lotions mags on the chair while I'm gone so hopefully it won't be a problem. But often I'll ask the people next to me to keep and eye on my stuff.

Many years ago on the QE2 you picked out deck chairs paid a $2 fee per chair they put a tag on it with your name that was your chair the whole cruise. Since RCCL is charging for other things I won't object to a $5fee knowing that my chair would be there waiting for me always. Not having to eat brkfst fast then race to the pool. But I've now been sitting on deck 12 and usually not having a problem getting a chair. Better sun and easier to reposition your chair. It does get crowded on the pool deck. Have 3 cruise schedule for fall/winter so I can't wait to see what happens. Also on last two cruises had no problem getting extra pool towels from cabin steward.

I remember getting in line to reserve a deck chair. That was a very long time ago. There were many fewer people on the ship, and therefore a lot more deck space per person.
I pack an inexpensive towel with my last name monogrammed (by my niece's sewing machine) on both ends. I leave the $25 pool towel in my cabin. It doesn't take that much space and is good for packing any fragile stuff I bought ashore.
I hope RCI makes this one work. If people only used the chairs they were sitting in, there would be plenty for everyone.

Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise!

And for those of us who like to really swim (rather than dip) in the pool - maybe we could get a locker for our towel and shoes and coverup? I don't like to take a chair for my things when I am just going swimming, but I'd hate to lose everything to cleanup when I'm in the pool. Nancy

John,

Cruelty to overweight people is more rude than hogging a pool chair, if even done in "jest".

I now have a way to pay for my next cruise...offer to save chairs for the BR break, lunch etc. for a fee of $1 per minute. I already have to drag enough stuff on board without bringing chairs! You know, the crock pock, mattress, hibachi grill, kegs...no room for chairs, the camel will protest.

My issue with the whole thing is the pool patrol was not timing how long you were gone. But rather just went by a row of chairs and cleared them off. I can't see them marking the chairs so I don't know what the best solution is. No matter what they do some folks are going to get tee'd off.

This thread got pretty heated last night...glad I asked for e-mail updates!

In defense of shellys, while I don't think it was a good idea to send her DH to grab 4 chairs all alone, I also don't have a problem with her staying in her chair all day enjoying the sun & pool. She's certainly entitled to her vacation choices. I only gripe about the folks who have saved a chair they are NOT using! That's the real problem!!!

I don't gamble, so maybe this is a non-issue, but just to play the advocate...Do we begrudge those folks who camp out in a casino chair "hogging" their fav game?

First come, first served. Just make sure your butt stays located on that chair (within reason - please feel free to pee in the bathrooms! People actually start reserving chairs at 7 am???

Let me make sure I get this straight though, the problem rests primarily with poolside chairs. If I want one near a railing overlooking the sea or near the bar (or both) I'm more likely to find a chair, right? I really planned on exercising and/or eating breakfast at 7 am!

Yes, I didn't either have a problem with that either.
That’s why I specifically included this line in my post.
"(Note: If you want to sit in the sun all day thats fine, but you clearly stated you just wanted your chair held all day and didn't like having to actually use it to hold it!)"

She still tried to claim I was saying she couldn't have the chair all day as part of her semi-retraction but it didn't wash.

Folks did get a bit rude though.
I'm more than willing to face someone when they are doing something antisocial, but I try not to be firm not rude when doing so.

Those of you asking about just swimming/lockers, etc. Princess had a pretty good solution. At the pools at the aft of the ship and the solarium pool at the front of the ship (both adult only pools most times), there was a section of "bleacher" type seating - tiered rows of wooden benches just on one end. We and others used these to put our stuff on if we were just swimming. It worked well since you could still see all your stuff, but not take a chair (especially near the rear pool there weren't many).

Here's a link to my picture of that area - you can see the bleachers in the lower left corner:

MY SOLUTION TO THE POOL CHAIRS, WHICH I VERY SELDOM GET TO SIT IN BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL GONE IS TO GO ON ANOTHER DECK UP TOP THE POOL DECK USUALLY YOU CAN FIND A CHAIR AND NO ONE CARES IF YOU LEAVE YOUR STUFF AND GO SOMEWHERE FOR A FEW MINUTES OR SO. FOR THE MOST PART THERE ARE PLENTY OF CHAIRS TO SIT IN EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT NEXT TO THE POOL.

DedeM:

Yes, it's the poolside chairs they're talking about. Personally, I wouldn't use one, because it's noisy and there are constantly people walking by to get to the Windjammer or the Solarium.

DH and I use the chairs on the Promenade Deck, which we refer to as "the porch". It's Deck 5 outside, and we pull our chairs up to the railing so we can read, talk, and look at the beautiful ocean go by endlessly. Sooooo relaxing!

If you like the bustle and the music, then do as the previous poster suggests: go upstairs to the next deck. There's plenty of lounges up there, and it's less crowded.

We had a really nice balcony with lounge chairs on our last cruise so spent any of our "laying out" time out there. Only used the pools to swim so the bleacher area was adequate for everything we needed it for!

quote:
Originally posted by skiiergirl:
cruisingirls....There are usually enough deck chairs that you will find somewhere to sit. It is just that the "premo" spots fill up fast. If you want to be right next to the pool then you may have to get there early and plan on staying in your chair all day. There are usually chairs around the pool and up on "pool balcony" for two or three decks. There are a few chairs in the shade, a few chairs with wind, a few chairs no wind, chairs near the bar, chairs away from the bar, chairs near the band, chairs away from the band, etc. (You get the picture.) Unless you specifically want to be right next to the pool you generally won't have trouble finding a chair to sit in....it just may not be in your first choice of location. Enjoy your cruise!

I'm SHOCKED! You mean that a chair by the bar is not a premo spot? I guess I'm in good shape then. Looks like I won't have to get up at the but crack of dawn to get a chair where I can sit and drink my breakfast.

I don't understand the "pool chairs". It must be that we live in Arizona and we are lucky enought to have a pool in our backyard. We have been sitting by the pool since it hit the 90's last month. When I'm on vacation it means, sleep in, eat late and watch the ocean go by. You can't even see the ocean from the pool chairs. Oh well, to each his own, but vacation is tooo short to worry about a plastic chair.

Just got off the NE. The pool police are in full force but it doesnt stop there. We had chair hogs everywhere. The lounges, theatres, etc.. It has gotten quite out of hand. An older couple reserved a couch a 6 chairs in the lounge the day of debarkation.
They refused to let anyone else sit there. On the other side 2 adults were fighting because one wife saved several chairs and the other wife kept bumping her with her chair. That got loud and ugly.
At the pool, there are clearly marked signs about saving chairs. The pool police were out by 7 to warn everyone not to save chairs. Days at sea were ugly. I agree that to save and sit is one story but to save and never return is quite another. It got so bad that a woman puled towels off 2 chairs when the patron went to the pool. There was a shouting match, again. Literally, her chair was in front of the pool and she watched it happen. The other woman couldnt care less. She wanted that chair so she took it!
I suggest that they simply add more chairs, reconfigure their postion(you can add more by changing the row design) and eliminating chairs for kids. our city pool policy prohibits chairs for kids under 18. They are never in them anyway!

A couple of years ago we were on the Radiance in the solarium. It was a little packed but an open chair here and there. My wife and I found a couple of chairs there and when I pulled it over to sit by her a man told me he was saving it for his friend(s) and wanted it back. In scooting it back, I accidently knocked over his $7.00 fu-fu drink of the day, and yes it was quite full. I apologized and relinquished the chair. Now normally I would've offered to buy the guy another fu-fu drink, but figured this one to be the cost of reserving a chair for friends named Harvey. Losing the drink did upset him though.

Anyway, a kind lady on the other side moved over and we sat there for a half hour or so. No friends showed up for the guy with the now $14 fu-fu drink of the day. As He began to gather his stuff, he rather sheepishly said he guessed they weren't showing up and in a fu-fu kind of way apologized about taking up the chairs for no reason. I accepted his gracious apology and said, "Yeah right, just like I'm sorry about [accidently] knocking over your fu-fu drink of the day"

I am glad to see them do something to control this. I guess I'll have to bribg a padlock to hold my place when I take a dip or a dump. Anyway thats my two cents.

Bob

PS As for the older couple reserving the couch and chairs, when the elapsed time becomes ridiculous, I'd resort to flatulance. You feel better, piss them off, and people around you will think grandma and grandpa have had a blow out in their Grampers (Adult diapers)

In the Solarium on the Brilliance, it was like watching a checkers game. People moved to different chairs all the time. Some had missing cushions and they too were moved from chair to chair. Every once in a while someone whould move, leaving me between 2 empty chiars. Then a couple would come in looking for 2 chairs together, I would move over one chair to let them have 2 together. No problem and they were almost shocked I would do that for them.

As for the queen of chair hogs on our cruise she would have 3 chairs....2 in the solarium, 1 sun-1 shade and another in the sun at the outdoor pool....she cared less for anyone looking for a chair.

I say Yay - for the chair hog police!
Its absolutely ridiculous what people will do and re: the towel issue too...
Was on Mariner in Feb....scoping for deck chairs.....noticed a group with towels on them- but no people. So we stood back for about 15 minutes and watched to see if anyone came...
Then we approached and asked the people nearby if anyone had the chairs.. and they said NO... so we park ourselves...two girls on two chairs....We took turns switching off with our husbands- if they wanted to sit or lie out.... so on one round when I was standing in the shade...I could see a man approach my friend..and begin yelling at her- berating her for taking his chair and more importantly his towels...
So- I go to intervene and advise the RUDE man that I placed his 3 towels-( what was on the chair when we arrived) into the towel bin....Which of course lead to him freaking out about the towel charge..he even tried to take our towels... So...I again advised him where his towels were and how long it had been since he sat at the chair..... he proceeded to stomp away and then was complaining to the pool staff -about what I dont know... Point of this loooong story being- They had left the chairs unoccupied for over an hour before coming to look for the towels..
I hope- who ever he is - that he reads this message- because - he was the most ignorant person ever & made a fool of himself...& for what...!?! Further- they dont even charge you for the towels.....how on earth do they know where your towels are....if they have a towel BIN at the pool? My fellow travellers had numerous towels brought to their rooms daily...with out charging. ITs just a way to prevent people from stealing towels...
I totally agree with everyones post....about the sign-out card yu can leave on the chair... It would certainly eliminate confusion.

We just returned yesterday from the Rhapsody. Only 1-2 days did they announce that they were going through and if they saw no one sitting in the chair for 30 minutes then they took the towel and all their stuff and put them in a bin. Helped a little but still saw alot of stuff sitting on empty chairs.
