Chair Hogging crackdown

Recommended Posts

Been gone a few days and just read what turned into a very "heated" topic! I guess on this board you really have to spell out exactly, word for word, your situation.

To Big Dave, john&kelly, and bmgaritty and anyone else who seem to have all the answers and "do no wrong", I will once again "spell out" what chair hogging is....it is reserving chairs for someone who is not there for a long period of time....according to this board, that would be any longer than 15 minutes or so.

My husband went down at 7:00 with book and coffee in hand to sit (not by the pool), but on the upper deck. At this time, there were many others also around. He only put a towel down on a chair next to his for me, as I was putting on my suit in the room. He called to the room and said I needed to hurry, as deck patrol was taking towels off chairs that weren't being used. I did just that and was there in a matter of minutes. Our friends also went with me and got two more chairs right next to ours with no problem (hubby did not have towels on those)...there were still plenty, even poolside. We are all sun-worshippers and planned and looked forward to STAYING in our chairs ALL DAY!!! My point was to say that deck patrol was looking to take your stuff if you were gone for only a short period of time, which we never were.

Sorry it had to take for me to word for word explain exactly what our intentions were....some of you out there are just looking to pick a fight....why don't you take your sarcasm and built up anger and vent it in some other area besides on a board that was put in place to help people, rather than criticize them for no good reason.

Thanks Pudy68 who actually made sense of my comments and understood what we did, rather than criticize. And for john&kelly who made the unforgiveable comment about me (or anyone for that matter) possibly taking up two chairs...that was an AWFUL thing to put in print...you should be ashamed!!! And just for your information, I am 5'4" and weigh 125 lbs., not that it matters what size anyone is... You must be one of those "bullies" one reads about and so full of yourself.

I have used this board prior to and after cruising for about 4 years now and USE to find it was a place for much information and to meet many nice people...don't get me wrong, there are many of you still out there. But for those who are abusing it with comments and opinions like those I've been seeing over the past few months..I feel sorry for you...you obviously need to get a life!!

On Rhapsody last week, every morning the cruise director came on the PA and announced that if you weren't using your chair for more than 30 minutes, they would remove your stuff.

To me, that's a reasonable compromise. 30 minutes gives you enough time to grab a piece of cheesecake in the Windjammer and run back to the Solarium to eat it, without losing your chair, or allows you to winky tinky, or jump in the pool or whatever, without losing it.

And therefore there were plenty of chairs to go around, even though the ship was full.

So I think they did a good job of enforcing it, and I didn't see any arguing or anything like that.

What a commentary on modern 'society' that folks whould become so heavily invested in a virtual furor over strips of vinyl on aluminum framing.
Is this merely a smaller symptom of a larger degenerative societal disease?
Perhaps the art of gracious behaviour has become a unresurrectable casualty of . . . what???

I totally agree on your definition of chair hogging.

I'm sorry the other folks got so rude. I was just holding you to your original post not calling names.

I went back and reread your original post, and although it seems clear I am willing to accept your re-interpretation and attribute the original post as a miscommunication.

I could care less frankly, but my wife wants to go out to the pool for a few hours a day.

It's a fixed resource, and some feel it's important to their enjoyment of the vacation.

Chairs being routinely held for hours by towels and a random item was a big deal to my wife who had a hard time finding a chair on the pool deck (where the sun was good, but the wind wasn't to strong).

If RCI keeps the policy it will have effectively became a minor issue. (BigDave crosses his fingers)

I love these threads!

On the Mariner last week... here's what I was told by the pool attendants. "We are not allowed to remove items from chairs after 11 am". Whatever that means.

On our last day, the wind was so bad, if you didn't use your rear end to hold down your towel - it was more likely than not going to flap around and land in the water that was being dumped into the pool area by the huge waves coming out of the pool.

What I REALLY love, even more than chair hogs... are those people, who don't manage to get themselves to the pool early enough to get a chair in the sun - they don't hesitate to take a chair (from a shady spot) and move it to wherever they feel is a good tanning spot... usually smack in the middle of a walkway!

I always go up early (7:30-8:00)and get an end seat for the extra room on one side. What gripes me is when someone gets out of bed and at noon drags chairs to my open side and corners me in and blocks a walkway!!

Shelleys,
Your above statement - your hubby getting 4 chairs - is what I was posting about. I did not begrudge you sitting in a chair all day - you may want to reread my posts.

Do you have to spell it out? You may want to communicate better - people's powers of ESP do not work on bulletin boards

PS- I am a sun worshipper but I do not save chairs.

Days til our vacation

Big Dave - Glad you now understand what I said. I am not and never have been a "chair hog"....Hubby and I always get up early enough to get chairs to stay in them all day because we love the sun. I'm with "candleonwater" above who states what I think is "THE" most rude thing, which is to crawl out of bed late in the morning and get ticked off that there are no chairs, then drag one right in front of someone else...how rude!!

bmgarrity - Hubby had chairs next to him, however, my fault for not stating that he never "held" their chairs with towels or anything else....there were still plenty of chairs to go around. If I had known I was going to get crucified for my post, I would have gone to great lenghts to spell out exactly what I was posting.

P.S. - I will always be a sun worshipper and I don't save chairs either!!!!!!!

Man Oh Man , I this thread fun to read. I am having the greatest giggle .
This is one thing my wife and I never worry about since we must stay out of the sun due to our very fair skin.I have yet to sit in a lounger by or anywhere near the pool. If Ice Sculpturing or horse racing etc., is going on we just stand and watch and then carry on to something else.
I have never witnesed pool chair masacre as I am just not around it.

RCCL doesn't need Headliners anymore. Just go see the "show" by the pool. You can even get a balcony view. I can't wait until next week. Let the games begin!!!!!!

I just like to sit out and see what everyone is wearing, sometimes it quite entertaining. I enjoyed the thread that is going around now about the most unusual attire you have seen on a cruise. (i.e men in thongs)

Hi Folgy, I am with you--just give me my little patch of shade by myself. To me sitting less than a foot away from someone I don't know (and in my swim suit, no less) is not my idea of relaxation. I, too, have never had to participate in the Chair Hog Wars!!! What if we were to glue their items they're using to "save" the chair, TO the chair? Since we can't use the chair, than neither can they!

Ok, so I've been reading this thread and following it daily, and I must say that it makes me laugh! I've been trying to come up with a way to break the chair hogging and all I can come up with is a device that attaches to the chairs with a metal arm over it that you have to insert money into in order to sit on the chair . . . once you get up the arm closes over the chair. This way everyone has an opportunity to sit on a chair and once you're up it's not yours anymore . . . and maybe RCI can get enough $$$ from this that they can dismiss the cover fee into JRs (lol).
