Just off the Elation

Hmmm, the other poster said they took Amtrak. While I'm not a big fan in dredging down to downtown L.A., I'm wondering what type of fare they paid ? And how far in SD will the train drop you off from the port ?

thanks

I believe the fare is $34each way & it is a great way to get to the ship - it's a block walk from the terminal. Check the train schedule, they may have a closer stop to you than downtown.

We're on the Elation right now and just got off in Ensenada. The ports had to be changed around due to Tropical Storm Julio. We'll be in Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday and then a day at sea on Wednesday heading back. This was the first morning for breakfast. Many people complained about the omelette line in some previous reviews, but there were two lines and it was short. The buffet line was longer for breakfast at 10am. We brought wine bottles in checked baggage and 4 bottles of champagne, no problems getting wine through. In fact, I could have brought the limit on carry-on, then in our checked bags as well. At dinner, we borrowed wine glasses and so we can bring my champagne or wine without the corking fee anywhere on the ship. We took Amtrak, arrived in San Diego at 10:10 and were at the terminal by 10:30. It's all within walking distance. Once you check-in with Carnival and get your cabin keys, you're free to go roaming around San Diego again until they start boarding. We chose to wait an hour until boarding at 11:30 and they had a buffet waiting for passengers. On the Lido deck with the buffet, you can also watch the pirate ship battles with a table outside. I almost brought an iron, but forgot. The passengers were complaining about their irons being taken away. In the $2.00 laundry area, there are irons to use, but you can't take them any where. The city is very clean, but I think many vendors got thrown off schedule because the ship changed days. There's an Internet Cafe on the main street in an orange colored strip center near the "Malecon" off the ship. At the corner, there is a liquor store. There was a $2 shuttle into town, very professional company, $1 to return to the ship. I think the ship was charging $10 or $12 for this. The internet cafe rate is $1 per hour for those that need to communicate back home. Next door is an artisan shop with real silver jewelry. I bought a beautiful bracelet for $20. There is another street in town that runs parallel to the main street. There's a Thrifty's with ice cream. Next door is a cafe-latte, also very professional and clean. We're headed back to ship for lunch. Everything is great so far.

Thanks for the update...have a great cruise and please leave your review...I will be looking forward to it...

I'm getting so excited! We leave on 9/25/08 for a romantic getaway. I can't wait to read your final review. I'm sorry your computer went bananas. Anybody do any sea kyaking in Cabo?

Hello, I posted some info on another thread. I pasted it below. I started answering a thread about bringing alcohol. Yes, there is kayaking where we walked all the way around the marine, but you can catch a water taxi to go over there instead.

Just got off the Elation today. We took 4 smaller bottles per person in our carry on and we could have taken more in our checked baggage. We checked in at 10:30 and boarding began at 11:30. We ran into friends on the ship. They had problems with packs of beer on a prior cruise, but no problems when it was spread out in different suitcases on this trip. They also took vodka and rum in water bottles. The family at our assigned table did the same thing and no problems. BUT if you go to the Captain's party on 2nd evening and the Past Guest party on 4th evening, there's 2 nights of unlimited drinks. We'll do a review soon, but since you're leaving in a few days, getting off the ship was much quicker when I told them the night before disembarkation that we had a 9:30 am train (train station is about 1 block away). They didn't ask to see any papers, but just in case you can take a print out of your train schedule or any plane schedule from Expedia, etc. They gave us tags that had group 2 on them. Without those tags, we were in group 20. On our last cruise, our plane left in the evening, so we took our time and were last off the ship. Today, we got off the ship at 9:15 and barely made it to the train station by 9:30 am. We were home by noon and off to work by 1pm. The ship was 1/2 hour late docking and Customs came onboard to arrest a female. Breakfast: many people complained about the omelete lines. If this is important, we were at the omelete line at 10am on the Ensenada morning and 2 people were in line :) The next day, at 11:30 am, it was a sea day and the line went all the way around towards the back of the ship which didn't make sense because at noon, they start lunch so by the time we came back, the line was gone since they started making hamburgers instead. Omelets are available in the dining room without the long lines each morning and capuccino's are free. Sandwich line is long so get there right when it opens. Cabo was very hot. We had more people bothering us to buy stuff and go on tours in Cabo compared to Ensenada. We walked all the way around the Marina (long walk) and found a great beach area. If the walking is too much, there must be hundreds of water taxi's. They wanted $3 per person each way to take you back to where you catch the tender to the ship. In Ensenada, we took a $2 shuttle to town and then walked all the way back to the ship. Internet access was $1 per hour off the main street. If you walk off the ship, walk to the main street, make a left past the Malecon (water canal). Near the corner where they rent ATV's, you'll see an orange colored strip center where you'll find the internet cafe. If you go East, off that street corner, past the hotel Misiones (looks like a mission) you'll find another main street leading to all the shops. You'll have a Thrifty's Ice Cream shop on the right hand side and an awesome cafe (similar to Starbucks). On the ship, my favorite dessert was the Grand Marnier Souffle (spelling?) with orange sauce on the 4th night! We noticed that Carnival allows you to adjust the gratuities. We had great service every night and we don't mess with their livelihood. Many people don't realize that Camp Carnival is not included in those gratuities or that they need to pick up their kids during breaks. Our son enjoyed every minute. We give Camp Carnival about $5 per day at the end of each cruise.

Have fun! We did :)

Hi, We will be on the 10/13 sailing. My wife is a bingoholic, do they have bingo and if so do they have a progressive pot that is usually hit on the last day and do you know how much was in it.

Thanks

Enjoyed hearing some recent stuff on Elation. We sail her on October 4th. We are going to a friend's wedding on the ship and then sailing and I am excited to be able to board early. The wedding invitations say we must be there at the cruise terminal no later than 10:30 am to board for the wedding.

TO the poster who asked about jackets We went on the Elation in June and it was chilly on Deck, granted I am from Arizona and aclimated to the hotter weather, but I was suprised that in June it would still be that chilly.

Also the year before we sailed in May a Baja cruise and had to buy jackets.

Now when we were in Cabo it was hotter than you know where. Our sailing only did the one stop in Cabo,I believe we would have enjoyed it more if there was another port stop - I am not a fan of lots of sea days.

No they dont have a progressive pot at the end, They do have bingo, but in my opinion it was very expensive and not worth playing.

I'll be on her 9/6, just a couple of weeks, ..yay!! Thanks for the heads up on the buffet. Does anyone know if they have Texas Hold'em in the casino, or any poker whatsoever other than video poker? Also, do they have roulette? Thanks so much :)

We are also sailing on the Elation 9-6, my husband looking for Texas Hold'em also. I understand if you can get enough players they might hold a tournament:) .

Our cruise was Saturday to Thursday and our ports were backwards due to a tropical storm, but here is when Bingo and Texas Hold'em were offered along with a bunch of other activities:

Saturday, 4pm, Texas Hold'em, 9:45pm, Cash Jackpot Bingo, purchase one set of cards for both games.

Sunday, Ensenada, Formal Night, no Bingo, 4pm Texas Hold'em, Fancy buffet at midnight.

Monday, Sea Day, 10:30am $650 Jackpot Bingo, 12pm to 3pm $500 Slot Tournament and Texas Hold'em, 6:30pm AND 8:15pm $750 Bingo, Mexican buffet at 11:15pm.

Tuesday, Cabo San Lucas, no Bingo, 8pm Blackjack Tournament qualifying, Mexican buffet at 11:15pm

Wednesday, Sea Day, 10:30am $800 Jackpot Bingo & Golf Putting Contest (winner takes all), Mardi Gras Slot Tournament qualifying at 12noon, 3:30pm, $3000 Big Time Bingo, 9:45pm $1000 Cover-all Bingo.

High Tea was very good and served at 3:30 pm on both Sea Days. You don't have to show up at 3:30pm. We waited until 4:15 and found window seating quite easy. The pastries are different than the ones offered in the lunches or dinners and not as sweet.

Internet was 1/2 price on Cabo San Lucas Day, after sailing, 4-6pm only.

I'm sure they follow the same schedules on Sea and Port Days :)
