CFitzRN Posted September 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2008 After spending weeks (months) on here learning all about Carnival and the cruisin' lifestyle, we took our Legend cruise in July and I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not a cruiser. I wanted so much to be enthralled by the experience and I just couldn't be. I didn't like the mild seasickness I always felt (never terrible, but I kept a queasy feeling the whole time); I thought the food was marginal and sometimes bad; I didn't like being stuck with the same people all week; I always felt "wiped out" (probably something about the seasickness); I hated how our key cards kept not working (PITA!); I found the pools to be tiny and way overcrowded - I'm not posting this to be a downer, really. I guess I'm mourning the fact that I'm not one of you happy, cruisin people. I think I'm too high-maintenance! It sucks. The ports, however, were wonderful. I think I'm a land-vacationer at heart. Anyway, I had a ball hanging out with you guys for those months and wish you all many happy cruises. :)
madelinerose Posted September 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Christy, no problem. Just like everything else in life, we all have our likes and dislikes. We will never cruise exclusively and take more land vacations than cruises, but cruising is certainly not for everyone. We have many friends who tried it once, never to return. So, it's not just you. Glad you've found your niche and back to the land you go. ;)
Magic City Cruiser Posted September 8, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Different strokes, darlin'! Glad you had some fun at your ports so it wasn't all bad! Donna
Toddcan Posted September 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 8, 2008 My dad hates cruising too. We see him only at Christmas. :D I'm kidding of course. I totally understand that cruising is not for everyone. At least you tried it, and no longer have to wonder. Enjoy your land-vacations.

old sole Posted September 8, 2008 #7 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Its so refreshing to hear that the experience just isn't to your liking, instead of an overblown list of complaints. Cruises don't suit everyone. I remember your pictorial review, it was great. I'm glad you had a good time on shore even if the ship didn't exceed your expectations. dommer573 Posted September 8, 2008 #12 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Sorry you didn't love cruising. For the last 9 years I have been telling anybody that would listen how great cruising is and I get a little sad when I find someone whose not as crazy about it as me. Oh well, I hope to see you guys in some port someday.
pungo3 Posted September 8, 2008 #13 Share Posted September 8, 2008 I'm so sad you didn't have a fabulous time. That really stinks. However, cruising isn't for everyone. There are others out there, just like you. Enjoy your future 'land' vacations.
CEWayfarer Posted September 8, 2008 #14 Share Posted September 8, 2008 From one Christy to another, you might find that over time, you'll change your mind. I never thought I'd enjoy cruising. I'm more of a 'fly into a European city, explore for several days, then hop on a train and see where I end up' kind of person. Our first cruise was on the Pride (Mexican Riveria). Out of the 3 ports, we had been to 2 of them in the past, but we really needed a simple, inexpensive vacation, one where I didn't have to do much planning. It was OK. Not great, but not bad (thanks to dramamine!). Two years later, some friends convinced us to cruise to Alaska. I realized if I was ever going to see Alaska, this was going to be the only way, so we signed on. That was a great cruise and we really enjoyed ourselves. Now it's two years later, and we're booked on the Liberty in November. Why? Because I got a good deal and I really need a vacation. Sure, I could drive to San Diego or San Francisco for a week, but I'll actually save money by cruising. Plus, cruising forces me to relax; if I'm 'stuck' (for lack of a better word) on a ship, I have no choice but to relax for large chunks of the day. Sure, there are activities, but I'm not a casino or bingo person, so it's a novelty to relax on the balcony with a cocktail, my sweetie and maybe a good book. Sure, I'd rather be flying to Italy or Paris or London and seeing the sights, but this year, instead spending an arm and a leg (in euros or pounds), I'll spend a bargain week cruising (with the dramamine, just in case!). I'll never be one of those people that have 5 cruises booked for the future, but one cruise every couple of years is OK, as long as I get my crazy adventures in between! Good luck! Think about Alaska next time!
Vanessa L Posted September 8, 2008 #15 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Hey, it's all good!! I like land vacations too. I've just not been able to find one on land that offers everything a cruise does for the same amount of money. But last year we spent 8 days in Paris and it was FAB!!!! And not a ship in site. But, the pocketbook was WAY more dipped than what a cruise does to it, that's for sure. To each his own and I'm glad you tried it out anyway!! bluejeans Posted September 8, 2008 #17 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Please don't feel bad about not enjoying your cruise. It isn't for everyone. But thank you for sharing your experience. And being cordial about it. :)
mamasue Posted September 8, 2008 #18 Share Posted September 8, 2008 CFitz.... you tried it... gave it a fair chance, and didn't like it. Fair comment. Thank you for not blaming Carnival, other cruisers, the staff, or anybody else. It's refreshing to see a post like this (even though you didn't enjoy your cruise) without blame or abuse!! I hope you have lots of nice land vacations in the future .:)
CFitzRN Posted September 8, 2008 Author #19 Share Posted September 8, 2008 "I'm more of a 'fly into a European city, explore for several days, then hop on a train and see where I end up' kind of person." We share not only a name, but the same idea of the perfect vacation! That sounds absolutely fabulous. About Alaska - I am really, really itching to see it. I would even consider another cruise in order to do it. In fact, I am planning on Alaska for our next family vacation and will be exploring all our options. :) Dramamine - even the "no drowsy" kind - just made me want to sleep for days. Same with Bonine (meclazine). There's probably something out there that would work for me.
grandmato4 Posted September 8, 2008 #20 Share Posted September 8, 2008 I'm smiling while reading your post:) We love cruising but neither do I think that cruising is the perfect vacation for everyone. All the things that you mentioned are things that I know would bother some of my friends so when talking to them about cruising I never fail to mention the things that I think they might not be thrilled about just so they have a more balanced picture other then just all the things that we do enjoy and love about cruising. You gave it a good try and realize that land vacations are more to your liking so that is exactly what you should do for now. On the other hand, it is also entirely possible that in a few years you might look at some things slightly different, so I would never say never;)

Traveler353 Posted September 8, 2008 #22 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Sorry you did not enjoy the at sea part of cruising. Give the all-inclusive resorts at the stops that you enjoyed a try. Besides the cruising, I fly down to the Yucatan a couple of times a year and just hang out for a couple of weeks. You will see much more and get to know the people. The residents of that part of Mexico are some of the friendliest and kindest folks that you will find anywhere.

Terry305 Posted September 8, 2008 #24 Share Posted September 8, 2008 Who says you can't still hang out with us? :D I agree with Kelz, why leave??? If you enjoy Honduras , find out more about it, plan a vacation there in a nice A/I , my husband loves going to the A/I in Punta Cana I do enjoy it but I am a cruise addict, also we get better deals in a cruise and it does depend in our budget, last year we spend like $4,000.00 for the A/I in Punta Cana , it was nice but I am spoiled with the Cruise lines lol. Stay around:)
1tuckersmom Posted September 8, 2008 #25 Share Posted September 8, 2008 It is O.K. that you do not like cruising, just happy that you like Cruise Critic.:) My DH would be so much happier if I cruised with our granddaughters (I sometimes do) and just leave him home alone with our poodle. He will cruise, but only to make me happy, it is sure not on his list of favorite things to do.
