NCL shipboard credit...

I was just wondering...is there anything that you can't use your shipboard credit for (drinks, tips, etc.)? I tried looking it up on their sight, but I didn't have any luck. If anyone can let me know what the restrictions are or send a link my way, I would appreciate it. :o

What kind of ship board credit are you talking about. If it was given as a promotion, then it can't be used in the casino, drinks are fine, I'm not sure about the service charge. If it's credit that you've been sending in overtime, then it can be used for everything.

Every time we had some kind of promotional OBC-- we were told it could not be used for gratuities or in the casino-- but pretty much anything else. On one cruise though, they used it on our account just like cash-- and we ended up using it for the $10 a day service charge. Not sure if this was a mistake on their part-- or if others have experienced this.

shows up as a credit on your statement. Can't be used for casino (a given). We've had it applied against gratuities (only charge we had on one sailing) as we booked own shore excursions, brought our own soft drinks/bottle water on board and by passed the overly priced pictures and ship trinkets.

We had shipboard credit given to us as a gift in February 2008 when we were on the Gem. We asked and were told it couldn't be used for tips (or service charge as gratuities are formally called on Norwegian). I'm happy to hear that others were able to use it for tips but we were told otherwise.

Question. Although it says it cannot be used in the casino, what about a cash advance at the casino cashier? I've done that every trip and it is applied as a charge to your room bill at the end of the cruise.

So, if I have an OBC of $400, and take a cash advance of $400 in the casino, would that work? I'm thinking "no". LOL I'm sure people would do that and not spend the money in the casino...just take it home. Unfortunately, I'm not one of "those". :-)

Tried that two cruises ago.....

As expected (and written) -- the OBC doesn't apply in any way, shape or form to the casino! Oh well........

If it comes as a gift, the giver has paid full price so you should be able to use it for whatever. Actually like Educators2 said, it shows up at the end on your final statement. As long as the amount you have spent on the cruise is more than the credit they just take it off...If you have only charged $50.00 and your OBC is $200, no, you will still be billed for the casino and tips. If, on the other hand you have a $200 OBC and your total charges are $600.00, the $200 is just taken off at the end.

With NCL's sale going on with the significant obc, in conjunction with the possibility of refunded fuel surcharges in more obc, I believe that we are going to see many more obc questions.

Specifically I think there may be some thrifty cruisers who become angry when they find out the limitations of NCL' obc.

As far as the Casino, I have a different understanding of the OBC's than has been posted here. If you are talking about taking cash out of the casino where it is charged to your onboard account, no it can not be applied to that. However I was told that if you sign up for the slot tournaments or Texas Hold'em tournaments, etc it can be used towards that just like it can be used towards Bingo charges. You might want to check at the front desk when you board to make sure, but that is what I was told by casino managers on two different ships. And I am referring to the OBC that is a promo, not OBC that has been purchased as a gift, etc.
