captainannoyed! Posted March 1, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2009 On a recent thread I saw someone mention that her DH played in a poker tournament on the Serenade a couple of weeks ago. I will be sailing on the Serenade in a few weeks and am wondering if anyone knows what the buy ins for poker tournaments during the cruise were/are. Thanks

Thanks Buy ins for the Texas Hold'em tourneys are usually $100. Black Jack tourneys are much less. Some as low as $20. My DH won first place in one and $375 which helped with our bar bill very well. captainannoyed! Posted March 1, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted March 1, 2009 $100 buy in, and first only netted $375? Do you recall how many people were playing?
meansun Posted March 1, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 1, 2009 $100 buy in, and first only netted $375? Do you recall how many people were playing? That had to be for the black jack tournament. You can buy in multiple times. Texas Hold'em usually yields like $1200 but you win a free cruise on the Liberty for 2 in Dec for the $100,000 Tourney. MickeyB426 Posted March 1, 2009 #6 Share Posted March 1, 2009 Last week on the Independence, the Sit and Go's were $125 each, 10 people on the table. They'd play 4 per day on the sea days, starting at 1 PM. The ship raked $250 and the first-second split was $700 - $300.
gdpups Posted March 1, 2009 #7 Share Posted March 1, 2009 We're sailing on the Serenade in a month and my husband loves Texas Hold'em. I've seen prior compasses and it showed different rounds, round 1 & 2 on the 2nd night, round 3 & 4 on the 3rd night and so forth. Can someone explain how it works, do you just sign up for a certain round??? If you win to you advance?? I saw the final was on the last night of the cruise. Also, how long would each game last. Reason I'm asking is I wanted to eat in the specialty restaurants on several nights, but don't want to mess with his poker!

We were on the Independence earlier this year and these numbers are correct, but I'd also add that the tournament mentioned earlier that gives the winner a free cruise on the Liberty was not offered on the Independence. I asked several of the casino folks about this... most all of them had heard of that promotion but they had no info on when or if it would be offered on the Independence. Blackjack is usually $20 and the payouts vary wildly depending on how many people get in. Be sure to try to get into the last of the opening rounds so you know how much you need to win in order to make the finals :D

That is the most utterly horrific rake structure I have ever heard of! I also heard that the NL/PL cash game rake is 15/10, which is pretty bad, and the blind structures in the SNG's are pretty much "Play 3 circuts, pushfest!" Regardless, I can't see it stopping most people form playing, being a vacation and all. If my DW plays slots I'll play some cards.

But it is not unheard of outside of Vegas or casinos. The nearest cardroom to me is 20%-25% rake. I hate it but the next option it driving to CT casinos which is a couple hours drive each way. Still, at least they now offer poker. They never did when I cruised before.
Mademypoint Posted March 2, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 2, 2009 EOS had a hold em machine when I was on it. It's hard for some to get used to and it can be temperamental. It also will time you out if you don't bet after a specific period of time.
