Where to stay for Brooklyn departure

luv1another4ever,

I own a transportation company with an office in the South Bronx. We do a lot of pickups/deliveries in the area of the HIE. My drivers won't go down in that area very often after about 6:00PM. We have one customer who starts unloading at 2:00AM. The only drivers I can get to go down there INSIST on taking a friend or another driver. Not a nice area. You need to be EXTREMELY careful taking the subway after rush hour. I sure wouldn't stay there and I am in the South Bronx at least once a month and out and about at all kinds of warehouses in the area at all kinds of weird hours. MUCH safer areas to stay-even Long Island City HIE beats this area and that area still in "transition".

LOL thanks We don't agree on directions that often but we agree on other things. I am waiting to see one of your trucks so I can raze your drivers :)

BTW it turns out the second murder was more than a year ago it does stick in my mind however. The baby ultimately died too....

Just look for the prettiest trucks in the neighborhood. They are all long hooded Peterbilts-most red or maroon, with a couple of brown, a couple Red Cherry (real metallic and changes colors) and a couple of Red Pearl (they look black/purple) Don't give my guys too hard a time-I need them working the rest of the day.

I am really trying to figure luv1another4ever out. Flies into Islip from Kansas (must be SW employees)-otherwise, the fares out of MCI to NYC are cheaper on other airlines AND you don't have the long schlepp on the LIRR. Those SW fares are NO LONGER cheap. I fly that route about once a month (MCI to NYC). I have much better luck with American.

And if they fly into Islip, they could stay most anyplace. I have stayed at the Long Island City HIE. Not bad. But the real deal in Long Island City is the Verve Hotel. Boutique hotel, free breakfast (and not just rolls and coffee), free parking (which is amazing in NYC) and large rooms. All for about $100.00. Certainly not the Mandarin, not even the Crowne Plaza at LGA. But a darn decent hotel for the money. And they are VERY friendly. Can't be more than a 10 minute cab ride to Red Hook. And right around the corner from the subway. A good deal all the way around.

I can't figure it out either. If the OP has points for a room, there's a Holiday Inn in Soho at 26th and 6th that would be a quick cab ride from Penn Station. They might pay a bit more for a cab to Red Hook, but they could walk to tons of places and not spend money on the subway. I'm not familiar with the area of Brooklyn that is being discussed, but I did live in Brooklyn for a year many years ago and I would take the advice of a local in a heartbeat.

Greatam,

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza LGA twice, on your recommendation. This time we are leaving Red Hook on a Friday & are thinking of not staying at the Crowne because of the traffic on the BQE on a Friday morning. I was thinking about the Club Quarters in the financial district. Called them & they don't offer any discounts unless you are a member. Prices still aren't cheap or another option is the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge which has even higher prices. We don't want to stay in Manhattan. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!:)

Try the Nu Hotel at Atlantic and Smith Street.

Probably the safest place in NY across from the courts and closed jail. $ blocks from the Jay Street Boro Hall Subway....

the Tripadvisor reviews, like those of any hotel property, are mixed, so you have to take the bitter with the better, and in the end, make up your own mind.

you can also take a virtual walk around this neighborhood using link below to google maps. As you can see, you're not in Kansas anymore. I've stayed here, as well as the Days Inn and Comfort Inn, Brooklyn. I've stayed at the Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn, Long Island City. I would return to any of these properties and walk to dinner or take the subway in the evening.

that is NOT the same Holiday Inn express its the one on Union Street. - actually a much better neighborhood and a bus street so its much more lively. Two toms around the corner and the Union Street fourth avenue stop is about a 100 feet away. Its between third and fourth avenue while the other one(which may have been the comfort inn) is between nevins and third...a few blocks makes a big difference.

Note my picture shows a one way street. The picture on your site shows a two way street with a faded double yellow line down the middle.

the picture shows a Holiday Inn express sign but its a flag covering over the old comfort sign....this is at 279 Butler Street

I did a lot of price hunting online on the many travel and hotel discount websites to find a good deal. That's how I ended with the Club Quarters. I figured out what hotels were near the Red Hook and slogged through reviews and prices.

Can I ask what rate you got at Club Quarters?

Hey guys - thanks for all of the info - yes we are on SWA, free ticket and companion pass - so the airfare is only $10! I can't beat that. We actually enjoy the train ride into the city, that really isn't a problem to us.

I am going to change the hotel - so should I look at the holiday inn in Soho?? Or is there a better spot to stay? We usually stay in Chelsea - that wouldn't be too bad of a trip on Saturday morning, would it?

Thanks for all of the pictures and articles - I am going to take your advise.

this is on Lafayette off Canal Street in the Heart of China Town and near little Italy. their are subway stops at Canal. Try Puglia's. WHen taking a cab to the the cruise terminal take these directions with you....

Take the Brooklyn Bridge go straight ahead(not the first exit) to Atlantic Avenue(about 7-8 lights) make a right on Atlantic Avenue go under the overpass and make the left-stay off the highway- make the first right(at the third light) follow around until Bowne Street make a right into the terminal

Time about 15 minutes without traffic with traffic no more than 25.

Two HIX hotels steps from each other, go figure.

Thanks for clearing this up!

I am fairly certain but not positive that they are under the same owner. I don't know what happened but I suspect they are one for payment of a franchise fee. It used to be a comfort something. They really do look alike don't they...

$119 a night compared to other rates I find on other sites, I thought it was pretty good.

I'm sure the rate depends on the date. sempronialou - $119 sounds fabulous. Solara - what date are you looking at?
Great rate sempronialou! I got a rate of $205 + taxes for July 16th.

I just completed a stay at the Butler Street HIX and wanted to report that I made it our alive and well, no worse for the wear. My priceline bid of $54 was accepted and I parked on the street for free, and believe it or not, my truck was still there the next morning. Walked up to 5th avenue without police escort and had a great meal at a Spanish restaurant, and did not encounter one mugger, thief, miscreant or flotsam and jetsom of society. I did have breakfast with tourists from the Netherlands and Korea, though.

good for you. I wasn't promising you that you would be mugged but it is still not the best place for most people.

I am headed over that way to do some shopping pictures are worth a thousand words....

How nice of you to take the time and do this. I still wonder why tourists take the advice of people who have spent eight hours in a location over a local who knows the area well.

Good karma to you!
