Just back from London Cruise Show

Recommended Posts

Hi Boardtalker, how are you? Have added you as a friend. I found a thread we were both on regarding booking T&C. Hope you've been able to resolve that.

Hellosailor : PITA indeed ;) Wish we could have stayed longer and chilled with you a bit more. Would have been fun!

With regards to the pictures of me that have been posted on this thread.... the camera never lies? BAH! I'm at least 28lbs thinner and 10 years younger than portrayed.

In sequence I have a series of eight photographs and place you in third position, without too much deliberation basing this on someones admiration and your gesticulation! Congratulations... with due respect!

Regards,

Boardtalker.

Hey if you really want to be a Royal Pita then who am I to stand in your way!! You carry on being a Pita if it makes you happy!!!

Ah now the Arthritis Stand, I passed it on my way round and thought I'd probably need to go back and visit after the show (I bet that guy thought you were a pita!! :D), plus I meant to go get a head massage!! However I wasn't in need of either thankfully!

Nina

I also wish you could have stayed longer. Hopefully, one day we will cruise together - would be fun.

Yes, I also meant to get a head massage - forgot about it though.

The other stand which made me laugh, was some travel magazine which was SELLING back editions for ONLY £3!!! When I said I thought it was a bit rich to expect us to pay that for an out of date copy, the staff grinned in agreement!! Didn't notice anyone handing over any spondooliks!!

It just seemed that the only company who made a real effort was RCCL!! Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to meet any of the staff as the stand was so busy!! Hope it sends the shares soaring!! They had separate stands for Azamara and Celebrity - all three very well designed.

Thank goodness it was a beautiful day - I made a last minute decision to visit yesterday, and despite living only 12 miles from the centre of London it took by 3 hours to get there. Train to Waterloo with no problem, then a very long wait for the Thames Clipper, only then to find there was not enough room for all of us queuing. So another long wait ensued for the next Clipper. Eventually I board - nobody to show me to my cabin or offer me a glass of champagne! A nice ride all the same to Canary Wharf - then there was no sign of a shuttle bus, no signs to tell you where to go - or anybody to ask. Ended up walking about a mile until I eventually found the Canary Wharf shuttle and finally got to Excel 3 hours after leaving home (and I agree with previous posters, what a long walk to find the exhibition hall. It had better be worth it I thought - sadly I thought not. Don't quite know what I was expecting, but I expected much more. I know I'm a cruise junkie, but a bunch of people handing out brochures, who once you told them you were already booked for this year, dropped you like a hot potato for the next victim, was not fun. By the way, I did enjoy the quiz on CC stand and fingers crossed that I might win one of the many competitions that I entered. Would I go again - not if it was at the Excel. I'll end my tale, by saying "Thank goodness it was a beautiful day" and wow my home city is very beautiful from a boat.

My wife and i have just returned from the show. Very useful to pick up some DVD's and find out about all things cruising. Listened to John Carter, talking about Viking River Cruises. Entered some competitions and spoke to a nice young lady on the CC stand, which was a bit plain.

Agree with comments about transport, though we drove from Dorset to Raynes Park, about 2 hours, then took train to Waterloo, followed by problematical journey on Jubilee Line and replacement bus sevice for DLR. Next year it should be much better. I was impressed with the venue facilities, but the show was a bit small and the lectures needed to be in quiet rooms, not in the open.

Now we have to wade through all the brochures.

Absolutely no problem getting to the Show. We checked on the tfl website re any problems with the DLR which we noted. We took the tube from Harrow to Canning Town (changing at Finchley Road onto the Jubilee Line) and picked up the replacement bus direct to Excel Exhibition Centre - 1 hour door to door. Considering it was a Sunday transport service, it was excellent. The Excel staff at Canning Town were efficient and helpful.

We visited the Cruise Critic stand and were delighted to meet Carolyn Spencer Brown and had a brief chat.

Re the stands - RCCL/Celebrity/Azamara was by far the best stand at the Show. We were very disappointed with P&O/Princess/Cunard - a very poor display considering the amount of space on the stand. As already mentioned, HAL was almost non-existent. Just along from HAL was Peter Dellman. We spoke to the rep who had just arrived and ask for a brochure (out of interest). He had none left and it was only noon on the 2nd day.

As a general comment; we had a very pleasant couple of hours at the Show - met someone we knew - but as previously mentioned, the venue was unsuitable for the size of the Show. It would have been better suited for a more central London venue with easier access. There were several major cruise companies missing - MSC, Carnival, Costa, Disney, etc. Perhaps they were waiting to see how this first UK Cruise Show took off and measure its success.

A question we would ask all the cruise companies who exhibited:

Why didn't they make an effort to have their new brochures available in time for this Show instead of telling visitors they would not be available until 1/2/3/4 months time. The current brochures go up to March 2010. We, amongst many others, want to see detailed information about the new and current ships and itineraries beyond March 2010 now. If they want our new/advance business, they should get their act together.

This is the first UK Cruise Show. We look forward to it being an annual event with more exhibitors, but the cruise companies must get their acts together more efficiently by the time the Show takes place.

P&O, in essence, was the biggest no-show. A lot of people were talking about that. And Sky Travel's Steve Read, who also writes for the Sun, told me that Royal Caribbean's on-site travel agents were so busy over the weekend that they were calling staffers at home and asking them to come in and help!

The show was a cruise show, the first one ever in London. All the main cruise lines were there with the exception of Costa Cruises and MSC. There were plenty of specialist cruiselines, expedition companies. There were tourist boards from various destinations and all things cruising. We also had talks and DVD shows.

Hi, just a shout-out to Cruise Critic members who stopped by our booth to chat (many of you are in the photos we're posting) -- it was excellent to meet you! Among them were Elizanessie, EJ Nutz, Norbert's Niece, Mr. Snuffles, Poo Magoo, Legalneen, Hello Sailor, DJ Mutters, and Daz-Gee.

And of course Cruise Critic staffers were on hand -- you've already seen photos of Kelly Ranson, our UK editor; Ian Rumgay and Jane Owen, who handle our p.r., were there as was Sandra Moore, who is our sales advertising manager. And me, too :) --

You did an awesome job manning the stall and it was wonderful to meet you and the others from CC. I envy you all your jobs. CC is so much more than just a notice board. It's a community rich in information, support and advice. May you go from strength to strength.

Wishing you a safe journey home and hope we get the chance to cross paths again.

Carolyn - Very much enjoyed your stand - and meeting y'all.

I do hope they do it again next year - at a different venue though!! Not sure I can cope with the battle with London Transport again!! And yes, I live in London. I rarely use the Tube since I retired - yuck!! Occasionally the bus and mostly shanks pony in town.

I can recommend the Cumberland Hotel for the exhibition next year. 100 yards from where I live, so I wouldn't be able to do a Mrs. Meldrew!!

Howdy -- totally agree with you about venue. Needs to be somewhere people can GET TO :)

We loved being part of it. This is the first time we've ever done anything like this....

Congratulations to the winners of Cruise Critic’s Cruise IQ Challenge last weekend at the Cruise Show!

Brenda Spooner from Essex took the top spot on Saturday. John Gurton and Trefor Lee, from Kent, won Sunday’s competition.

Both Brenda and John/Trefor will receive a bottle of Champagne.

If you played -- and didn’t win -- there’s still plenty of time to practice for next year’s cruise show! The game is of course located on Cruisecritic.co.uk. Here's the direct link as well: http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk/cruiseiq
