Just curious how you do this b/c hard liquor doesn't show up online, just wine. Do you have to call them in order to get it? And how extensive is the mark up? Just curious :)

I would just smuggle but the transporting via airplane is where I worry...

I know it is not there but if you call you can ask if your fav is available and order. I think the 1 L bottle of Jim I bought was $35.

Can anyone recommend a liqour store in Miami that caters to cruisers?

Thanks in advance!

Depends where you are staying and if you are driving or walking... if you are in close vicintiy to Total Wine that place rocks.. they have everything.. if not find a local gas station or store that sells liquor;)

Yoowch. $40 for a litre? I guess that makes sense but ow ow ow. That's a lot of extra money. Especially since I was looking for a bottle of Bombay. That'd probably be close to $60. I guess I'll just have to go the smuggling route! O.o

What's the general opinion of which is better? Smuggling via checked luggage or your carry on?

We are staying at Embassy Suites Airport South...we will just hop a cab wherever we need to go but it will be around 9:30pm on Friday or early Sat.

Dunno the area at all.. I usually stay downtown Miami.. but I am sure the hotel staff will be able to direct you to the closest liquor store.. or the cabbie would know as well;) You could always use google maps to see if there is a total wine near by:D

The folks at Carnival monitor these boards

:)

Well in that case, lets change the name of this thread to

"CARNIVAL EMPLOYEES, DO NOT READ THIS THREAD"

Carnival has read these boards-- they know full well this happens. Personally, if they started checking your checked luggage we'd opt for an all inclusive in cancun or something. We just couldn't afford to cruise becuase our bar bill would be outrageous. Even with smuggleing I believe we spend more on DOD's and such than many passengers do that don't smuggle.

They do read the boards.. because I think in late 2006 after our 1st cruise where I found out here that we could order liquor from a company to deliver to the ship.. which we did for our 1st cruise.. that is no longer available..

I think the prices of drinks on board are fair. However, I know I drink a lot more on a 7 day cruise than I do in an entire month at home (easily!)...so it gets expensive. I smuggle stuff on and buy on board as well...generally drink the smuggled stuff in the room while getting ready or whatever.

Ditto!!! Carnival does not go broke from me or anyone having a few dranks in their room.. my bar bills are around $600 for one person per ... besides my last cruise which sucked.. it was 1/3 of that:(

Has anyone ever had problems with the beer packed in their suitcases? I worry that they will explode with excessive baggage handling.

LOL I left them in a drawer when I was out... I think if they saw them they would leave them alone... I take care of my cabin steward so I dont think they would bother...... :D

Catch me if u can carnival!!!!

And there it is! People who would never think of "stiffiing" the waiters and stewards, have no problem with "stiffing" the company that makes their cruise possible.

I asked all of the high and mighty tipping cheerleaders about the subject of smuggling booze on board, and nobody was interested in discussing the subject. My conclusion: It would appear that it is okay to break a cruise line "rule," but heaven forbid that anyone should not adhere to "recommended guidelines."

Happy cruising to all!

Bob

P.S. It's all about money, but the high and mighty think one is okay, while the other isn't.

Ok so here is my plan...

I am going to buy a fifth or so in San Juan and put it in my carry on to get on the ship. (we embark on a sunday). No worries... here is my question. How do I purchace rum on an island and get it back home with me. Wrap it up and put it in my checked luggage?

Just wanted to add my thoughts here. First off, i haven't cruised yet, next year will be my first time. WOO HOO and i will be bringing some alcohol with me.

I understand people think it is wrong to smuggle....but the prices on board are rediculous. The cruise lines could cut there alcohol prices in half and still make a killing. There is no way i could afford to spend 8.00 on a drink and 5.00 on a beer. I hear a bucket of beer is 19.00, i can buy a case for that amount. I work with someone who went on a 7 night cruise and she told me there bar bill was 400.00....I almost fainted...

I know for a fact that we will buy some drinks from the bar, there will probably be times we don't wanna go to the room. But for the most part, I will be carrying it.

400 for 7 days , what is she a tea totaler . ours usually runs about 1200.00 for 7 days and we bring rum runners

hey,

could you also buy bottles at each port and bring the back to your room?

absolutely , but it's another smuggle . try putting some liquor in a bag fro liquor and some in another bag . when you xray in they will send you to the table to get the booze collected . Give them what's in one bag but not the other. It works.:D

IT really depends on the cruise line. I have been on 3 cruises, 2 with princess and 1 with HCL (going on a Carnival in April) and have never had a problem smuggling on booze. On our princess cruise, we walked on with a case of beer in our carry one and ciders and a bottle of rum. We picked up rum in every port in the carribean and had none confiscated when we reboarded. If they are the small airline size bottles or even medium sized, the secuity say nothing. Just don't put them in something obvious like a liqour store bag. A backpack worked for us..

I got a question though for all you previous Carnival sailers, Did the cabin stewart let you use the cabin fridge or did most of you keep things cool in ice buckets and coolers?

We put all of their crap in a cabinet and use the fridge , i pay for the room , they need to find another place to store their booze.

$400? I would have welcomed that. My boyfriend and I went on a 7 day and our bar bill was over $1000, and we brought drinks with us! AND, I can't say we were loaded each night either.

I like it , another professional :D:D

THE RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES are just that RECOMMENDED not REQUIRED OR MANANDTORY. Besides the subject of tipping has no fun value to it like, getting one over on the man (cruise ship company) does.

look at many of the posts, most smugglers have a hefty bar tab too. if the smuggler has his hooch confiscated, o well. we are not out anything, we get it back at the end of the cruise. Its a game that might cost the cruise company some profit, but it is not going to put them out of business.

I'm willing to bet you don't give back to the ship any money you won in the casino. How wrong is that, they need that money to run the ship, How dare you take that profit from the corporation.

Try a land base vacation.
