Carnival Ship in Backdrop on NBC NEWS - Trinadad

Just watching the morning news while I'm getting my morning CC reading in, and there's a Carnival ship in the background as they are talking about the O/Chavez handshake.

Really pretty, as it's talking up the whole left side of the screen past the news reporter, as the sun is coming up.

It is the Port of Spain, Trinadad.

Just wondering what ship it is. Could it be the Victory? What ship is currently sailing to this location? Or is Obama just taking a cruise?

Carnival Victory. FYI, the Elation has been chartered for a couple of months for the Olympics in Canada. 1/23/10-3/05/10 So ships can be pulled from service if the dollars are right.

Seems to me, they did the same thing a few years back for the Super Bowl in JAX.

That explains why I saw it on last nights news and again this morning, thought it was strange that a Carnival ship would overnite someplace like that. I too spent all the time looking at the ship and imaging what was going on onboard.

Read an article on this the other day. They are housing "the international press" since they only have so much hotel space there. After it is over, the ships are going on short cruises. The proceeds from that go to the T/T government to help defray costs.

April 13, 2009 -- The Carnival Victory and the Caribbean Princess are both under two-week, dockside charter in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, to house staff and international press during the Fifth Summit of the Americas.

President Barack Obama is among the leaders of the 34 member countries of the Organization of America States attending the meeting, which focuses on economical, social and political development of North, Central and South America. The event is expected to attract more than 5,000 visitors to Trinidad.

The ships were chartered by the Tourism Development Company of Trinidad & Tobago in order to supplement the 1,700 hotel rooms in Port-of-Spain, according to Landry & Kling, a Miami-based specialist in meetings at sea.

Landry & Kling, which arranged the charters, said that 3,000 additional rooms were made available on the 2,758 passenger Carnival Victory and the 3,100-passenger Caribbean Princess.

The summit takes place from April 17 to 19, but the ships also will be used for pre-summit and parallel events, including meetings and sessions.

Then the ships will embark on four-day, post-summit cruises with all revenue going to the government of Trinidad & Tobago to defray the cost of the charters.
