Carnival Hellgend I mean Legend 5-3-09!

I've been reading this thread and saw the video of this mob scene. While I do feel bad that many might have been disappointed to have missed two ports, the cruise line and the Captain had the best interests of everyone, both passengers and crew, sp any extra sea days would have welcomed with open arms by myself and my husband.

Now, I have never sailed on Carnival, nor, especially after seeing the video, would I want to. However, I worked in the shipping industry for 12 years. And after reading this thread and how people are NOT informed about some things, well, folks, you're going to get an education.

If you look at any of your daily newsletters, you will see the name of a local port agent. They are the ones who handle all crew changes, making arrangements for the line handlers (The guys who catch them when a ship docks,) pilots, tugs and any other incidentals. A cruiseline/shipping company has them do all the local dirty work and not from the corporate offices. If a ship misses a port, there is no refund because in many cases, you are dealing with local port officials.

Likewise, if a ship misses or has to cancel a port at the last minute, it's not the same as if you're in a car and can change at the last minute. These things TAKE TIME for the local agent to process and handle.

Oh, and let me tell you about how expensive a last minute port call can be. On one of our tankers, a crewmember had to have an emergency root canal. The closest US port was Key West. After all the local expenses, (pilotage, port agent fees, actual transportation to and from the dentist and payment to the dentist, it cost the company $9,900! Yes, you read that right. I processed all those invoices.

So I do know exactly what I am talking about. Remember, that you are paying for not only the ship and its expenses, but also local port charges.

And, the company I worked for is Overseas Shipholding Group, one of the largest shipping comapnies in the world and that used to own 49% of Celebrity prior to the RCI purchase, in the Accounting Department.

Oh! For those who were on that cruise, the country that the ship sails under? Guess what? You would have to follow that country's laws!!!!!!!! Companies can't sail under the American flag because the ship is not crewed in the USA and that goes from the Captain, all the way down to the low man in the Engine Room. Therefire, throwing around "Well, I have my first Amendment rights" isn't going to cut it if there are no such rights in Panama, which is where many of the ships are registered.

Anita - And a proud cruiser!

What was the reason given for not going to Roatan?

Who cares? Passengers KNOW they are not guaranteed to go to ANY port. Carnival can cancel a port for any reason, and does not have to disclose it.

What is totally beyond me, is why people don't just enjoy their cruise, and instead choose to get all upset over something out of their control.

Those idiots must have though if they made enough noise, they would get their way. I am happy the security applied whatever measures were necessary to deal with them! Good job, Carnival!!

I think that if people didn't like what the admin of this thread had to say, they should have gone to an "I love Carnival" thread to post. And resurrection is something people will just have to deal. Unlike most of the people on here, some of us do not spend 24/7 on these boards and so it takes time to catch up. I took one of the video's and mine was only one of many. I agree with the admin of this thread that this cruise was hell. The crew was not that friendly because as many of them told us throughout the cruise, they had been being worked to death by the new CEO of the company (who requires more than 80 hour work weeks out of each of them). Also, the cruise before us that debarked the day we arrived, well that was a swingers cruise. According to the crew there were public sex acts and orgies all over the public areas on the ship. With all the bio-hazardous materials left behind after sex, there is no way that the ENTIRE ship could have been clensed properly, or even enough to not pass along some serious hazardous things to new guests (I work in an ER and I know my hazardous waste/blood born pathogen/std information well). There was vomit in public areas that had not been cleaned up, there was vomit in cabins that was not cleaned. The casino staff were rude and unfriendly. I watch many crew members do something that required hand washing afterwards, and instead they touched food. Quickest way to spread germs is have a buffet. Not to mention the whole issue with the cruise ports cancellation. When Cozumel was closed, we got a letter stating we could reschedule anywhere from then to December 2010. It was my honeymoon, and if I had known just how bad the civil unrest I had read about was getting, I would have rescheduled. When we stopped in Grand Cayman (our first port) the townsfolk and the passengers from the other ships were telling all of us that we wouldn't be stopping in Roatan and that they had been rescheduled on the day they were set to depart their base Port of Call. When we and others returned to the ship, we asked the Pursers desk, we asked the Captain, and we asked the Cruise Director. We were told "No, we are definitely going to Roatan! There is no civil unrest!" I don't like being lied too. I would have rescheduled had I been more well informed like when getting the letter about the Swine Flu (which I completely get no matter how asinine it really is cause it is less dangerous then regular influenza and just another way the media spins things in the horrific direction), they could have said "Also, there has been some issues with Civil Unrest in Roatan, Honduras and this port may be cancelled in the near future if the need arises" well then I would have rescheduled. But why would they want to keep guests happy and safe by informing them of info a head of time? Because half of the ship would have rescheduled and they would have been out that amount of money on that specific cruise.

As always, the people who hate us whiners and complainers, well you have the right to make a choice... Life is about choices right... well you chose to come onto a thread talking about why this specific cruise was not liked by the thread admin, and why other may not like that specific cruise line. Your choice was to read and comment. YOUR CHOICE. And it was our CHOICE to feel the way we do and voice it. So get over yourselves and find a different happier thread if you don't like our opinions. Again YOUR CHOICE, and if you are choosing to stay on here to just throw digs and be nasty, then it looks like you don't make the choices that make you happy. Say what you want, cause we "the dislikers/whiners/complainers" get just as much amusement out of you as you do with us. LOL :D

Oh and a thread stays open as long as the admin wants it to... which means until they lock it so don't read it if you don't like it. Geez!

Okayyyyyy...... I think someone just needs to get a grip and chill a little. Civil Unrest? Is that a euphemism for whiners who are out of touch with reality and love to hear themselves scream and throw tantrums?

I think a lot of us would appreciate your posting a schedule of your future cruises, so we can plan ours around them. :D
