I have a guess at the cause of the problem.

I agree, it does sometimes seem unneeded to say "the Zenith". The first cruise ship I sailed was Century. That sounds better to me that to say my first cruise was on the Century.

But here's my guess. We're talking shorthand here... the actual names of these ships are not just Zenith or Century, but rather (in these cases I think) it is M.V. Century, and M.V. Zenith. Motor Vehicle.

It does make perfect sense to say I am sailing on the Motor Vehicle Century. "The" is the article for the noun "vehicle" and "Century" is just the adjective, although in this case a proper name.

Same applies to US Navy ships, USS Nimitz... I was stationed aboard the United States Ship Nimitz.

I dunno. I'm no linguist, but it sounds good to me! icon_smile.gif

Gee Danno,

You make such a big deal out of everything, however, I do hope you enjoy your upcoming cruise on 'THE ZENITH'. Do they have therapist in North Bay? Apparently not, or Danno would be cured of whatever ails him.

By the way Newt, another excellent post on use of the word THE.

Theron,

Don't post after 10:00PM icon_wink.gif. MV is Motor Vessel (not Vehicle- it would get really wet) and normally refers to those that are diesel powered. There was a big thread on this on what the various initials stood for a while back (i.e. M ships and the GST sig).

Thank you all for my Saturday morning chuckle!

Folks, you must note that Danno lives in North Bay, Ontario. We don't really know what life is like in North Bay!!!!!!

Here in Montreal...we would say that we are going on Celebrity, but we would also say that we are going on The Zenith.

As in England, we go to university. (In the U.S., I think you send your kids to college)

As for funner...the first time I heard it, my kids were little and I just figured it was a mistake that little kids make. Now it seems to be part of the "new English".

When I was taught (oh,so many years ago!) if someone asked how I felt, I was to answer that I felt well, or not so well. Now it is good or not so good! When asked how I am...I now also answer "good, and you?"

I was a teacher in the 60's and even then, grammar was not any longer emphasized. When I was a student, it was mandatory.

Things change...go with the flow.

Relax, Danno. The snow will soon disappear! (We have fresh snow on the ground this morning)

Have a Happy Easter!

Really...so you haven't been here in probably 20 years??? We are served by DASH-8 commuter aircraft, like thousands of communities all over North America.

Note to Babylene...you might want to take a look on a map. I think you may be NORTH of us!!

I may actually concede defeat on this, only because I believe the incorrect usage has become so commonplace that it has evolved into the correct usage...as I said to my wife, THE JILL, "you can't win them all" .

Thanks Derf for the dictionary reference.
but the Merriam-Webster definition of "the" is better explained with explanation "h -- used as a function word before a proper name (as of a ship or a well-known building) <the Mayflower>"
I always use "the" before the name of ship when I say what ship I am sailing on.
I'm glad you showed that I wasn't incorrect.

Hey Danno it was more than 20 years ago...does anyone ever say to you "book 'em Danno"? and while I have been on dash-8's, the last DC 3 I was on was between Palm Springs and LA. Actually I like the DC 3 as its bigger better insulated and faster...(with turbos)

Thank you def5585

This whole thread is probably totally unimportant but it is fun and interesting.
I must confess that I am one of those who would say that I was on the Century. After reading this thread I realized that I would not say I am going to the Macy's (nor if I had more money the Bloomingdale's).
I was beginning to feel that I might have been guilty of abusing the English language
Then I stopped to think and realized that I would also say that I was going on the Orient Express not I'm going on Orient Express. Now I am totally confused. What is the underlying grammatical principal at work here?
