misleading advertising by Princess.

I have never spent a dime in the casino. I didn't get the letter, but I HAVE gotten two emails about it.

 

Same here - my husband and I have each received emails on this and neither of us have been to the casino in many, many cruises.

Entirely agree - I wondered when someone would attack that smallprint. The omission of a fare price implies that it is covered (Tacit agreement), especially after noting every other cruise-related expense that the guest is responsible for. I find for the plaintiff, and award Mosy the price of a five day cruise:D, minus costs for taxes, fees, transportation, etc.:(

Princess has reserved a room for me next month, I guess they'll want me to pay for it.

 

Casino's frequently comp rooms for high rollers and sometimes people with modest play. I can understand cruisers who gamble a lot thinking they're only responsible for taxes/port charges etc. It's certainly clear to most of us reserving a room isn't the same as paying for it but it's not as clear to high rollers.

That's one reason. Another reason is people spend more when they don't have to produce cash or a credit card. Cruise ships don't want employees handling cash. They don't want to have to train employees (or have them take the time) to run a credit card. I'm not even sure a credit card could be processed at some sea locations.

And just an FYI... the casinos onboard Princess ships are the only department that is RUN by Carnival Corp. :rolleyes:

Not only to track the purchases but to also make sure purchases occur more easily.

 

While it may simplify the process onboard without having to deal with lots of cash. It also makes sure that people do not have to fork over their cash at the point of sale. Makes it way easier to get people to spend if they do not associate it with the actual cash they have in their pocket.

 

Always beware of things done "for your convenience". While it may be, it is usually also for the enrichment of the provider as well if not more so.

Princess/Carnival Corp may have gotten themselves into a legal bind with this one, especially if someone(s) want to push it for litigation.

When I was in a legal department reviewing marketing mailings, I HAD to approve plenty of advertising I personally loathed because though it seemed misleading, there were plenty of cases that demonstrated it was not. So, basically, unless somewhere in the brochure it said "free" cruise, or "all expenses paid", etc., not much will happen. I got the same Players' Club mailing and just tossed it after I read their pitch.

 

Also, the company I worked for was glad when I quit. My boss said I had too much of a conscience to work in a corporation. Nice. Real nice.

"Table and Slot Players may also receive complimentary beverages while playing, free gifts and other onboard benefits dependant upon their level of play." Now that's a sentence open to many interpretations.

"May" - This word has probably caused the most heartburn in contracts and government regulations. (Fathercop may agree with me on this)

"Beverages" - To some, tea, juice or soda. To others, alcoholic drink.

"Dependant" - Contingent on something or someone else. (Who makes this call?)

"Level of play" - Time wise, money won, or I'm betting lost?

 

One more for the people who don't receive satisfaction from the Casino Manager. Again, from the Princess website.

"The onboard casino operations will be the overall responsibility of the Hotel Manager or Director, who is charged with ensuring the highest standard of conduct for casino staff."

Toto you are very lucky in that you have received complimentary drinks. In all of my cruise I have only been asked once if I wanted a drink. Now I do spend a little time in the casino(not a lot) but I am in there and I only remember once being offered a drink. Weird isn't it.

We often get 1 free drink each night. I notice that the casino host wanders around looking at the tally on the machines. I think they look to see your credits and can punch in your machine number to see how long you've been playing. We move around the casino quite a bit so we make sure we speak to the casino host so they know we've been in there a while. We also tend to play only the dollar machines - don't know if that has any bearing on anything or not. We go every night about the same time so the same host is on duty. Once they get to "know" you, you get the drinks. On one of our cruises, we were given "Princess Casino" tee shirts and a travel bag. I don't think they have those anymore though.

If you want things complimentary I suggest that if you win at the slots and they come to pay you that you give them a tip. In addition if your playing roulette or cards and your winning you should tip the dealer. We were tipping the dealer and slot Hostess when we won. At the begining of the following night the mgr. asked if we wanted some cocktails and my Mom and a few others said yes. They were drinking on the house all night and when we left that evening the Hostess said we are all set for a party of six at the steakhouse and it's on the casino. Needless to say we indulged in some very fine wines and had a great dinner. I guess they comp you when you tip them when you win just like vegas.

The casino trip with my Mom and some family members was on the NCL Dawn from NY-Bahamas and the bill at Gatsbys was over 500 and my Mom just signed for it and it was removed from her account. It shows the amount on the bill and then the deduction right after that. The Island Princess we werertreated to dinner at the Bayou cafe for a party of four. The same thing happened to me. We enjoyed the dinner and I signed for the bill. I was told by the casino Hostess to just go to the bayou and have dinner as usual and she will take care of the removal. I tipped her 50 bucks when I hit for 500 and I tipped her 100 when I hit the jackpot for 1500.

I agree with you both. I never once thought that Princess was offering a 'free' or 'complimentary' cruise in the letter. Only incentives to cruise, provided by the player's club.

I do think some read into these offers what they want them to read, and jump quickly to conclusions.

 

I would love to know how many of the 'smaller gamblers' (smaller meaning they allot $500-$1000 or less in the casino for a cruise) actually were thinking that Princess was sending them a free cruise because they gamble? Just out of curiosity. :confused:

I was offered a sky suite on Celebrity on a cruise in europe this summer free except for Airfare and Taxes. I belong to there casino club and I was to late in responding cause it went right away. I did call

them because I did not believe it but the cruise portion was free. So if I would have gotten a letter from princess I would have thought they were offering something like celebrity was. Cruise lines sometime do this.
