Speciality Restaurant...dress codes?

Ok...don't all gang up on me at once. I am going thru all these post about "dress codes" etc. Seeing that the dress code has relaxed a bit since we last cruised 5 years ago.....which I am happy about frankly.

My question is: are these new relaxed dress codes for "all" the restaurants...meaning "all the specialty restaurants" as well as the MDR?

Don't want my hubby showing up in his "nice jeans" at Cagney's and being turned away.

We were on the POA, Hawaii, in May. I just checked the Daily and it says ...

"Nice jeans are cool except in the Liberty (one of the main dining rooms) and Jefferson's Bistro"

Thanks kb996....wonder if "Jefferson's Bistro" is the the same as the " Le Bistro" on the Gem? Hmm

Per one of the QA answers from NCL, staff answer

Here are some guidelines:

Jeans: Presentable jeans are permitted in most dining venues in the evening, except the “designated” venue. Presentable jeans are clean, without holes and tears, not overly faded, worn at the waist or hips and in good condition.

I called and asked what "designated" venue was... NCL customer support said... "I will have to ask my supervisor"... then came back with "per my supervisor the "designated" venue is the dress or not night in the main dining room" I had to ask if it is for Dress or NOT night then how does the NOT play in?

from the same staff answer... you can wear shorts in any venue...

Shorts: Only Bermuda shorts worn with a jacket and knee socks will be permitted in any dining venue for dinner. All other shorts will not be permitted in any dining venue for dinner with the exception of the Buffet and any outdoor dining venues.

that is if you don't mind looking like a fool with the knee socks and jacket with your bermuda shorts:cool:

I can vouch that you can wear jeans in Cagneys. I can't remember if it was on the Star or the Pearl last year, but one night I was really really tired and I knew after dinner my DP wanted to go to the casino. We were dining in Cagneys that night and I wore jeans so that I could go directly to the casino after we had dinner and wait for DP while he went to change out of his dinner clothes. Not a word was said to me.

If you go to this new niffty link someone posted on a thread recently that I have completely claimed as my own now.. LOL.. It says midway down on the right what the dress code is.

Thanks to all of you. I guess I will tell hubby. He will be thrilled. He hates getting dressed up on vacation. When you do it daily in the business world you want a break from it on vacation. We've been on NCL once before but that was when you had to at least wear dress slacks...no jeans back then.

He wears very nice jeans so I think he will be fine. :D

People tended to dress smart casual there were not as many people in jeans as in the normal restaurants but he wouldn't look out of place.

There was a guy on the table next to me and dh who was wearing a shirt and tie looking pretty smart. When he got up he was wearing grey sweat pants and scruffy trainers. It just looked so strange! Maybe he was thinking that when sitting down he would look pretty smart.

My freestyle daily from last week on the Star states: You'll always find a place for your style, no matter what you want to wear. Resort casual, including jeans, is welcome in any of our restaurants. No shorts permitted in any restaurant after 05:00pm.

Sailed on POA last April with my husband who hates to dress up for dinner. He wore shorts to the main dining room - Liberty the first night, Shorts were alright the first night since not everyone gets their luggage. The next night we were not permitted in the Liberty with shorts. We ate in the main dining room with shorts. We also ate in the Asian and Italian Restaurants and he wore pants to both. The main reason he loves NCL is he can wear shorts all the time.

  • 1 month later...

We sailed on the POA in August.

When I am on vacation, I wear shorts, a nice shirt, and sandals. (Well...weather permitting!)

The second evening we had reservations for Little Italy.

When arriving, I saw that shorts were not acceptable.

I asked them to go ahead and seat my DW, and that would I run back to the suite and change. I was assured that it was no problem. We were seated, served, had a wonderful meal, and received great service.

No problem.

I've worn nice jeans to Cageney's and Le Bistro without a problem. Although I do usually wear slacks when I go. When I checked the NCL website

Here's what the NCL website says about dress for dining:

"Casual is perfect in our restaurants too. Even if you've just been at the pool and don't feel like changing, no worries. Swimwear with a cover-up is fine at the buffet and outdoor restaurant. At night, it's relaxed all over the ship. When you're ready for dinner, it's collared shirts and pants or nice jeans for guys. Slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops are perfect for women."

"When you're ready for dinner, it's collared shirts and pants or nice jeans for guys. Slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops are perfect for women. Kids 12 and under are welcome to wear nice shorts in our restaurants "

So according to the NCL website, nice jeans are appropriate in their restaurants.

That's what it says, but in reality on most ships for most of the year one of the MDRs has had a "no jeans" policy. Now I realize this thread is supposed to be about specialty restaurant dress codes, but someone who reads what you have (accurately) posted from the Web site might assume that jeans are OK everywhere, when the reality is they have not always been welcome.

I think the problem is that "dress" and "nice" are so subjective. What one person considers "nice jeans" might not be "nice" to the next. And it doesn't help when NCL doesn't consistently follow it's own code -- what one hostess at one venue might allow, the next won't.

We just wear jeans when travelling to/from the ship (only thing we find comfortable dealing with toting luggage and air flights), and then wear casual pants everywhere else on ship. And sometimes wear jeans on excursions off the ship if we're on our own.
