Steppy08 Posted February 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2012 So far it looks pretty legit.... Hoping National Geographic is better than the crap 20/20 put on a couple weeks ago...

JennLuvs2Cruise Posted February 18, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted February 18, 2012 I'm really liking National Geographic's special so far.. A lot of actual footage & truth involved. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Steppy08 Posted February 18, 2012 #5 Share Posted February 18, 2012 Really good footage from onboard. Kind of damning evidence for Costa though... telling all those people to go back to their cabins and everything is okay.
JennLuvs2Cruise Posted February 18, 2012 Author #6 Share Posted February 18, 2012 That radio call between the coast guard and captain was pretty wild. I can't believe the captain reacted in such a way - what a disappointment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Gingee Posted February 18, 2012 #7 Share Posted February 18, 2012 We saw it a few days ago. Yes it was better than the 20/20.
RedInLove Posted February 18, 2012 #8 Share Posted February 18, 2012 Darn it, I have been trying to catch this show! I've tried recording it 3 times, and every time my DVR (built in to my cable box) has not recorded it; yet the DVR has recorded everything else I've programmed.

timetravler Posted February 18, 2012 #10 Share Posted February 18, 2012 I saw the whole program last night. It was pretty darn damaging not only for Costa, but mostly towards the Captain who kept telling everyone to go back to your cabins and that it was only an electrical problem. Plus when the Captain was ordered back on the ship, none of the passengers ever saw him get back on. This program seemed to be well done and a honest reporting of what happened. I hope all of you will be able to catch this program on the National Geographic channel. It was called the Italian cruise ship disaster, the untold story for all you DVR fans. Steppy08 Posted February 18, 2012 #11 Share Posted February 18, 2012 It's on again tomorrow- 2/19 on the Discovery Channel at 10pm. (discovery and NatGeo channels are the same company) It seemed that there was absolutely no senior leadership on board to deal with this. The crew (dancers) they interviewed were waiting for orders to go to the muster stations for over an hour.
cruiserfanfromct Posted February 18, 2012 #12 Share Posted February 18, 2012 I believe the Discovery Documentary will included the bridge video that was not included in the Nat Geo version due to timing. From the Channel Guide: "Discovery Channel will be airing exclusive footage of Capt. Francesco Schettino and his crew from inside the Costa Concordia bridge assessing what to do next as passengers fight for survival — taken during the Jan. 13 incident in which the Italian cruise ship ran aground and began to sink — in the world-premiere special Cruise Ship Disaster: Inside the Concordia, premiering on the network this Sunday, Feb. 19, at 10pm ET/PT. In the footage, Schettino is shown speaking by phone on the bridge, illuminated only by emergency lights after the power failed. He seems oblivious to the escalating emergency and the danger faced by the 4,200 passengers and crew. As the minutes tick by, an officer is heard shouting, “What shall we do? What shall we do?” Someone else cries, “General emergency!” But the order to abandon ship is still not given. Instead, Schettino is heard urgently asking for “tug boats.” Cruise Ship Disaster dissects the anatomy of this crisis, enlisting forensic specialists from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to investigate what went wrong. Reviewing the series of directives made by Capt. Schettino, the team of experts reveals that, in the end, the changing direction of the wind saved thousands of lives by pushing the sinking luxury liner closer to shore." estofon Posted February 19, 2012 #14 Share Posted February 19, 2012 I saw the documentary last weekend. As a regular viewer of the National Geographic Channel, I rate it as one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. It is that powerful.

It sounds like it would clear up alot of mixed up stories I have read on-line. Thanks for posting. I don't have access to it, either. There are six videos available online at the National Geo channel. flutepilot Posted February 20, 2012 #21 Share Posted February 20, 2012 This is a totally different show from the National Geographic show. The analysis from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is very good. This shows exactly how the ship got to where it did and why it listed so quickly. tntornadox Posted February 20, 2012 #22 Share Posted February 20, 2012 Indeed, if you were to watch a single Concordia special, this is the one to see. No sensationalism, only facts from maritime professionals. Very good program.
Steppy08 Posted February 20, 2012 #23 Share Posted February 20, 2012 Combine the two of these and it's a pretty comprehensive look at the disaster. The NatGeo special had a better timeline of the stuff before the abandon ship was called, plus interviews with a couple crew members as well. nybumpkin Posted February 20, 2012 #24 Share Posted February 20, 2012 I thought it was well done. Nice demonstration of the simulator at Mass Maritime and a nice analysis of what happened. I liked the lifeboat demo as well, but understand that the lifeboat at Mass Maritime is much smaller than a cruise ship lifeboat (oldest son is at US Merchant Marine Academy and they have a similar lifeboat) - think Capt. Richard Phillips and the Maersk Alabama.
glrounds Posted February 20, 2012 #25 Share Posted February 20, 2012 Watching it now, but there are some parts that are a repeat of the Naitonal Geographic show. (interviews, etc.). Interesting how they can piece this all together.
